Honk against Spectra

Two marching bands on their way to the annual Honk festival in Somerville and Cambridge this weekend detoured through West Roxbury this afternoon to join a protest against Spectra Energy's nearly completed West Roxbury natural-gas pipeline and transfer station. Read more.

Flower at Millennium Park

Slowly is the best way to to walk the path along the Charles River and Saw Mill Brook at Millennium Park - more of a chance to see things you'd miss otherwise, such as the small fish swimming along the river bank, the turtles sunning themselves and the small flowers on some stalks. And if you get lucky and you look across the brook, you'll realize what you thought was the top of a 15-foot tree stump is actually a great blue heron. Read more.

Guy flying around Millennium Park in West Roxbury

Seems there's this guy who's taken to throwing himself off the top of Millennium Park in West Roxbury, but it's OK because he has both a lightweight engine and a parachute and he flies around the Charles and Millennium Park and Cutler Park, no doubt having the grandest time. Mary Ellen captured him in flight the other day.

Boston firefighters are back in the woods between Roxbury Latin School and the bird streets in West Roxbury, where the brush has burst into flames again.

A BFD spokesman says officials have "no idea" why the brush keeps catching on fire when other parts of the city that usually see brush fires - including the nearby Stony Brook Reservation - have so far remained fire free over the past couple of weeks.

UPDATE, 3:20 p.m. Fire now at two alarms.

Boston firefighters are in the woods behind Willett Street (off Thrush Street) battling the neighborhood's latest brush fire. BFD reports this is the fourth fire in the woods near Roxbury Latin School in the past two weeks.

Boston firefighters returned to Eagle Street around 2:20 p.m. to battle a brush fire in the same area near Roxbury Latin School as the brush fire on Aug. 20. This time, the fire only went to two alarms, and it was declared largely out around 4:10 p.m.

West Roxbury protester sees size of saw to be used on her u-lock

Two protesters halted some work at the natural-gas transfer station in West Roxbury for 90 minutes this morning as firefighters carefully sawed through the bicycle u-locks that kept them attached to two separate cars, one in front of the main gate to the construction site, the other on Grove Street. The Boston Fire Department reports Boston fire units who'd been battling a brush fire near Roxbury Latin School since yesterday afternoon finally left the scene around 7:20 p.m. today. Read more.

Four under arrest at Spectra plant in West Roxbury

Protesters briefly halted construction of a natural-gas transfer station at Centre and Grove streets this morning before being arrested, in the latest show of opposition to Spectra Energy's high-pressure pipeline and the station, which will transfer gas at a lower pressure into National Grid's local network. A show called American Greed is doing an episode on convicted West Roxbury scammer Steve Palladino, who defrauded local investors from his office above his West Roxbury ice-cream shop. West Roxbury residents will probably recognize most of the locations - Roslindale residents get to ID one location as well (the kidlet recognized a couple of the girls in a photo taken inside iScream).
