Long Wharf in Boston flooded by king tide

Our own SwirlyGrrl took a walk down to the end of Long Wharf today to see the effects of the "king tide," a high tide two feet higher than normal caused by the alignment of the sun and moon - but which experts say will become the normal tide by 2050 as the polar ice sheets continue to melt and sea temperatures rise.

A federal appeals court today ruled the BRA can't turn a Long Wharf pavilion into a restaurant because the structure is protected from commercial use as part of a federal grant detailed on a map the BRA signed off on, then lost - but which a couple of retired National Park Service workers found three decades later. NorthEndWaterfront.com reports the state Department of Environmental Protection has ruled the developers of a proposed hotel at Lewis Wharf can't using harbor pilings that are currently submerged at high tide, which poses a bit of a problem since much of the project was planned for those pilings.

Charles Larner, who owns Pier 6 in the Charlestown Navy Yard, said today he'd hire a "launch boat" to offer free shuttle service between the that restaurant and the one he wants to build on the East Boston waterfront - and that he would look to eventually expand the boat runs to other waterfront neighborhoods. US District Court Judge Richard Stearns today added Massport to the federal government's suit against the MWRA and Eversource over an electric cable to Deer Island from South Boston that the feds say will interfere with dredging aimed at letting the Conley Terminal accept larger ships. Read more.

Massport wants in on a federal lawsuit against Eversource and the MWRA over an electrical cable that feeds the Deer Island sewage plant, which the government says was not installed as deeply under Boston Harbor as required, which means it's now in the way of a $350-million dredging project. 2016-08 | Helicopters Fly Low Over Downtown Boston & Waterfront

UPDATE: Helicopters are buzzing the area around Egleston Square as well.

Once again, reports are flooding into Helicopter Central here of low-flying, buzzing, really loud choppers just making loops around Boston Harbor, from Logan to Aquarium and back again, over and over again, so we're going to assume they're part of the same mysterious Pentagon/police training exercises we're not supposed to know about, except it's kind of hard to ignore giant blacked out eggbeaters roaring over your heads. Yes, there are military-type helicopters flitting all over downtown, the South End and the harbor tonight. Boston Police acknowledge they're part of some training exercise involving the Defense Department and local police that BPD was really hoping nobody would notice, except it's hard to keep the local twitterati quiet when helicopters are afoot: Read more:

There's this yacht that's been docked this summer at Commercial Wharf with a helicopter on it. NorthEndWaterfront.com reports it's for sale.

Two boats go bump in the day

Sid Murlidhar was on Long Wharf this morning for a little boat on boat action: One boat apparently had an engine fire and it bumped into a second boat, which then entered the personal space of the third boat.
