The Zoning Board of Appeal today approved marijuana shops at 430-454 Blue Hill Ave. in Grove Hall and 591 Albany St. in the South End.
In both cases, the approval does not mean the shops can actually open, only that they can now apply to the state Cannabis Control Commission, which would have to decide whether to grant licenses. Read more.

A decision by the mayor's office to approve two marijuana shops less than a half mile apart - in potential violation of a city ordinance - sparked an unusually volatile Zoning Board of Appeal meeting today, during which the board chairman slammed his gavel to the table to restore order at one point, not long after he yelled at a city councilor that she was out of order. Roslindale Craft Beer Cellar owner Bryan Reeves announced today he's shutting his store in the basement of the Roslindale Square substation. Reeves says he will stay open as long as he still has stock left - which he'll be discounting 25% starting Tuesday. Read more.

Brookline Police report things went pretty smoothly at the Brookline Village herbarium on its first day selling recreational marijuana:
BPD found limited disruption to area from 9 am opening, coordination went well. Schedule ahead worked, thus lines had less impact on pedestrian traffic. Mbta service not affected, heavy media presence. Overall successful 1st morning as a result of planning

Boston.com reports that TD Bank has apologized for, and taken down, a street ad that makes it sound like if your debit card has been stolen, it's probably in Dorchester. The wording's very similar to that on Samsung ads a couple years ago that implied stolen phones all wind up in Mattapan.

UPDATE: Market cleared to re-open on March 27 after passing a re-inspection.
A Boston health inspector today shut Ming's Supermarket, also known as New York Marts, 1102 Washington St. for a variety of health violations that included dead bugs on a hot-foods light shield and rodent droppings under a sink employees are supposed to use for hand washing. Read more.

The state Cannabis Control Commission today granted permission to NETA to open its expand its existing medical dispensary in Brookline Village to sales of recreational pot starting Tuesday.
The dispensary is in the big old bank building at the corner of Washington Street and Rte. 9.

Eileen Murphy watched a big wheel making a turn on East 1st Street this morning. It was headed towards the Reserved Channel, where Eversource is building a new engergy conduit to the Deer Island sewage-treatment plant, which it had to install after the federal government and Massport sued it (and the MWRA) because the original one wasn't buried deep enough and would have caused problems for the dredging ordered by the Army Corps of Engineers to allow bigger ships to dock at the Conley Terminal. The Massachusetts Appeals Court ruled today that Veolia, which generates steam at a Chinatown plant, owes the city of Boston $2.2 million in taxes for the 2015 fiscal year because it applied for a tax abatement via letters attached to its quarterly tax payments rather than through an official abatement form. The Supreme Judicial Court today upheld a fine of more than $2.6 million against a beer distributor for kickbacks paid to some Boston-area bars to give its beers guaranteed taps, but said that the state commission that oversees liquor laws can't punish a Seaport bar that accepted the bribes because of what it said was a tortured interpretation of those laws. Mayor Walsh announced today that the city will begin to put its cash on hand in environmentally and socially conscious investments - and in local financial institutions.
The operating funds, which the city uses to pay bills, could total about $150 million a year in short-term fixed income securities of companies that have strong environmental and societal records, and about $100 million to be deposited in local banks.

The McDonald's at 1750 Soldiers Field Rd. in Brighton is old. How old? It's so old the franchise owner had to file a formal declaration with the city Landmarks Commission to determine whether it was of any historic interest and possibly worth saving. Read more.
