Jumped for lottery winnings in East Boston; held up at knifepoint at Burger King in Fenway

Boston Police report a man who'd just cashed in a $10 winning ticket at Morris and Brooks streets in East Boston shortly after 8:30 p.m. yesterday was jumped by a man and woman:

The victim initially thought it was a friend and attempted to turn around, when he was met with resistance and the female suspect who was wielding a pair of scissors. The male suspect then directed the suspect to give up his wallet. A struggle ensued during which the victim yelled for help and he and the two suspects fell to the ground. A good Samaritan came along and grabbed the male suspect off of the victim, at which time he fled and the victim detained the female suspect.

Steven M. O'Brien, 27, and Jannell Smith, 23, both of East Boston, both arrested.

Meanwhile, around 1 p.m. yesterday, a couple was standing outside the Boylston Street Burger King when:

[T]he suspect approached them and mumbled something inaudible. The suspect then pulled what they though to be a silver knife from his pocket and raised it to one of their necks. The victims, at that time fearing for their lives, and believing that they were being robbed took the money that they had in their pockets and dropped it to the ground. The suspect then took the money and fled from the scene.

Jerry Savory, 53, of Jamaica Plain, arrested and charged.

Meanwhile, around 2:40 this morning, police report arresting a couple of Brighton dudes for disturbing the peace - on Peaceable Street.

Jimbo notes that 108 representatives voted against casino gambling and so he wonders why the Teamsters have only targeted four of them for defeat this fall, including Carlo Basile of East Boston and Jeffrey Sanchez of Mission Hill, but not House Speaker Sal DiMasi, who probably had a lot more to do with our continuing non-casino status.

Mattapan, East Boston as food deserts

Because they don't have major supermarkets and so many residents must eat junk food from convenience stores, according to this Dig article.

Hmm, don't know about East Boston, but much of Mattapan is within a five or ten-minute drive of supermarkets in Roslindale and Hyde Park (and yes, I realize poor people are less likely to have cars).

Boston Police report arresting a Dorchester woman on charges she threatened another motorist with a knife last night at the McDonald's drive-thru on Warren Street:

The victim elaborated by telling officers that they were pulling into the drive-thru window of McDonald's when they were confronted by another car who also trying to get in the drive through window. The victims reported that an argument ensued and they ended up letting the other car go first. The victim, however, reported to officers that the operator of the other car was not satisfied with being allowed to get in front of them and continued by getting out of her car, brandishing a knife, and threatening victims by saying "We'll kill you, I'll slash your tires."

Meanwhile, up in East Boston, police report a guy allegedly held up his former boss at knifepoint and made off with his car around 9 p.m. yesterday. Police say the suspect didn't get far - he allegedly smashed into another car at Border and Maverick streets. But when he tried to run away, two people grabbed him and held him for police. The driver of the other car was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
