Local Doc's Do What They Can to Help in Haiti: Fond Parisien

For some of us the earthquake that hit Haiti on January 12th is still fresh in our minds. Although the stories have fallen off the main pages of many major media sources, the immediate needs for assistance are still very real. As the United States pledges relief and the international community rallies to continue support hundreds of local volunteers still give all that they can on the ground in Haiti in largely unheard of areas.

Boston resident Hilarie Cranmer, MD along with her colleague Stephanie Rosborugh, MD from Harvard were some of the first responders in the days after the earthquake. Seasoned humanitarian crisis responders, Dr's Cranmer and Rosborough were able to assess the immediate needs on the grounds and foresee that rehabilitative camps would need to be quickly established for those recovering from massive injuries who were now homeless. Within an incredibly short period of time the Fond Parisien Disaster Recovery Center was up and running. Now, this site is in desperate need of financial assistance.

Report from Haiti: Why some patients are refusing surgery

Paul Levy posts extracts from a message from Dr. R. Malcolm Smith, Chief of the Orthopaedic Trauma Service at Mass. General, who reports an unusual issue:

... Coordination around the place is nightmare and have problem with patients. With infected open fractures that are not reconstructable, refusing surgery in case they need amputation. They are just frightened and know there is no limb fitting service. Heard of same problem all over. Families take them away for second opinion which will be the same. Next phase needs limb fitting/prosthetics please! ...

No outside help in one Port-au-Prince neighborhood, Bostonian reports

The Boston Haitian Reporter talks to Richardson Innocent, who recently returned to Port-au-Prince from Boston:

... Every morning, all the young guys in the neighborhood get up and hit the streets right away, we go through the rubble and we try to get people out. We can still hear the people inside some of them screaming for help, for water.

The bodies are decaying and there's no real aid from anyone yet. We're doing everything by hand ourselves. I've pulled people out, I've carried dead bodies. I've done things I never thought I'd have to do.

West Roxbury man to fly to Haiti to provide sad but necessary service

Got together with the Organization of Former Members of Mahanaim, met them at Temple Salem Seventh Day Advent Church. They have a place for me to stay in Haiti and will provide volunteers to help with my efforts to document the burial process and locations of their friends and loved ones.
