Boston's political machine of old still alive in West Roxbury

Promising myself I'd explore Boston in ways I haven't previously, I marched myself to West Roxbury for the Ward 20 caucuses. In the process, I ate some tasty donuts and witnessed a side of Boston I'd only read about in history books.

Passing the threshold from semi-dreary grey daylight to the inside of the West Roxbury Pub brought with it a number of surprises, none of which should have actually been surprising. First was the sheer number of people. There had to be a hundred people crammed into this little function room. At the sign-in desk, I was questioned by a trio of pleasant, preened ladies who needed to know my precinct. I didn’t know what it was, and they were kind enough to look it up for me. While waiting, I was pushed and pressed back and forth by the deluge of democrats coming through the door. Finally, I was given the precinct number and instructed by a friendly middle-aged woman in a red suit who seemed to know what was going on that I was to sign in, take a ballot for female delegates, and move along.

Roslindale Community Center Starts Wish List

With a multi-million dollar renovation starting to show its age, the Roslindale Community Center has started a "wish list" of various items and creature features that will make the facility a bit brighter and more accommodating to those that use it.

The community center operates as a partnership between the City of Boston (Boston Center For Youth and Families - BCYF) which owns and operates the building, and a community-based non-profit in residence that operates a day care service and various in house programming. The non-profit acts as the voice of the Roslindale Community in the center's operation.

In March of this year torrential rains resulted in the community center building experiencing water damage from above (a roof leak) and from below, when storm drains in Roslindale Square backed up resulting in a 6-8 inch flood in the basement prompting a need to replace some furnishings.

The center is also in need of adding to its capacity to address youth and adult programming, and also to facilitate access to numerous community-based organizations that use the facility as a meeting place.

Searching for fresh produce in the Sixth Suffolk

My (first! and totally amateur!) video project on the challenges around finding fresh produce in Boston's Sixth Suffolk. (And trying to explain why I keep ending up in the McD's drive-thru... mmmmmm Big Mac....) The Sixth Suffolk is currently represented by Rep. Willie Mae Allen and comprises the bulk of Mattapan, parts of North Dorchester and Roslindale. There are approximately 39,000 people living in the district. There are 2 supermarkets. Only one has a decent produce selection. Read more.
