Ryan Barrett and some friends were at an Irish bar in the South End last night watching the Celtics game when two older white guys started getting louder and louder:

... We chose to ignore the guys ... until we heard this: "C'mon, make the shot you f*cking spook."

Our table began bouncing questions off of each other - "Did he really just say that?" "I think he just called Paul Pierce a spook!" "WTF?!?!"

The guy overheard our table talk and started rambling to himself about how we didn't understand his life and how everyone called Black basketball players "spooks" in Roxbury in the 60's. ...

Getting ready for the 5 p.m. Celtics rally at City Hall Plaza.

Starting at noon today, T riders will get to hear Kendrick Perkins tell them over and over why they should use a CharlieCard (non-T riders, or T riders who want to hear him in crystal-clear CelticsAudio, can listen here - it's a 4.7M WAV file). The T says it'll be adding extra T service, will hold the last trains out of North Station until 15 minutes after the end of the game and will keep subway service going if the game goes past 12:30 a.m.

All hail Lakers?

Swirlygrrl mailed in this photo of some pro-Lakers graffiti. But not just any graffiti. It's right below that giant Celtics banner across from the Garden (that's what that green at the top of the photo is).

Dart Adams says real Celtics fans know how good he really was:

... Forget what Bob Ryan, Peter Mays, Mike Felger, and countless other writers and talking heads here say and have said about him. We true fans supported him from the beginning, rocked 8 jerseys and celebrated when he won his ring. I doubt they'll ever retire his number but I'd like to see him retire a Celtic and him and for him and Paul Pierce to both get their unis retired together. Here's to wishful thinking. ...

UPDATE: They've fixed it online.

Hilary Chabot starts a Herald story today like this:

It was a game-changing moment no Celts fan could forget - Kevin McHale clotheslining L.A. Lakers bruiser Kurt Rambis in Game 7 of the heated 1984 playoffs.

Herald reporters, however, apparently could forget which game that happened in - it was Game 4 - and that's important because some would argue it changed the course of the series (hat tip to Peter Shanley).

The Herald does redeem itself with its right person in wrong place story on a guy murdered in South Boston on Saturday. The Globe's coverage so far consists of a news brief.

Angela is in a good mood this morning:

... Knowing that so much of the sports-loving country hates Boston with a passion, it's fun to know that while yet ANOTHER one of our beloved teams is seeking a championship, countless fans around the nation are groaning. ...

Jim Sullivan, meanwhile, explains why beating L.A. is a noble cause - in a saga that involves the realization among Celtics fans in the last game of the 1982 Eastern finals that the 76ers were beating the Celts and would take on the Lakers for the championship:

... The Boston Garden crowd started chanting, with no prompting from a giant scoreboard, or from cheerleaders, or due to any sort of pre-packaged canned marketing.

What they started chanting was "Beat L. A.! Beat L. A.! Beat L. A.! Beat L. A.!"

In the midst of a heartbreaking defeat, they were cheering on their most hated rivals.

They were, at that moment, the classiest fans in all of sport.

Woot!

Jay Fitzgerald is glad he was wrong about the Celts and rounds up background links.

Capn Ho has an '80s flashback. Jay G. posts a photo of what he looked like the last time the Celtics made the finals. Denton gets out the wardrobe:

Looks like the Celtics have some fans out in Minnesota, where a company called FedTech makes water-jet cutting tools:

Jim Sullivan will sacrifice part of his music collection (the crummy part) to whoever comes closest to guessing the total Celtics point tally between May 20 and June 16.

Also: TNT is to LeBron James as Fox Sports is to the Yankees. Discuss.

Rob: The Celtics' annihilation of the Hawks in game 7 makes it hard to believe that the series even got to a 7th game.

Also: Here's why Shaughnessy didn't take a buyout: Sheer spite. "Your 2007-2008 Boston Celtics," he writes, because you know he's holding his nose not wanting a single thing to do with them.

The Herald digs up an old photo of Tom Menino flashing the same sort of finger symbol that got Paul Pierce in trouble.

Could Bob Ryan be blogging about this Curse Boy train wreck of a column when he writes the following?

Have we no institutional memory? People are beginning to act as if something odd is going on in the Celtics-Hawks series, as if we've never seen this before.

If so, that would be so cool.

By adamg - 4/24/08 - 8:43 am

That would make it 2-0.

Mike Bibby of the Atlanta Hawks called out Boston fans before practice at the Garden. He said the crowd at the first playoff game between the Celtics and Hawks were "fair weather" and only loud at the beginning of the game. Bibby further ran his mouth to suggest that it's only bandwagoning that has all the fans out right now and he didn't see "three-fourths of them last year" when he played here.
