State slaps Charlestown non-profit for shoddy spending; demands some of its money back

The Herald broke the news on Life Focus Center Inc. Read Auditor Suzanne Bump's report. Sample:

We reviewed the documentation LFC maintained relative to 189 of these expenses totaling $28,436 and found that all of these expenses were questionable in that they were either inadequately documented or did not appear to be directly related to LFC's program activities. For example, numerous purchases were made by the Executive Director at various restaurants, many that were out-of-state, located close to the town in which he lives and/or were for purchases made on weekends with no documentation that identified the business nature of these expenses. Examples of questionable purchases include a $52 purchase at a New Hampshire liquor store and 13 expenses totaling $610 that appear to have been incurred during a vacation that the Executive Director took in Florida. Further, many of these purchases, including those for restaurants, were improperly charged as program supply expenses against LFC's state contracts.

Rating the Democratic candidates for auditor, except Glodis, who doesn't believe in honoring commitments

Mike Ball reports on a forum yesterday involving state auditor candidates Suzanne Bump and Mike Lake, sponsored by the Young Democrats of Massachusetts. Glodis had originally said he'd appear, then backed out at the last minute claiming trouble at the Worcester County jail he runs, only there wasn't any trouble, just a chance to appear at a union rally he felt would get him more bang for his buck, Ball writes.

State Dem Convention results put two on Treasurer ballot and three on Auditor

The results from the state Democratic Convention being held today in Worcester are in, according to Boston.com and twitter feeds (hash tag: #madem10).

As expected, the Governor and Lieutenant Governor received enough votes to put them on the ballot (at least 15 percent) and receive the endorsement of the party (25 percent).

In the race for State Treasurer, Steve Grossman earned their endorsement by receiving more than 50 percent of the delegates' votes while Boston City Councilor-At-Large Steve Murphy made it to September's ballot with 15.6 percent of the votes.

The state auditor race is considered a hot one after Joe DeNucci announced his decision to retire (after ten years). Suzanne Bump, Guy Glodis, and Michael Lake all made it on the ballot. The rumor in the twittershere is that Glodis instructed some of his supporters to vote for Lake, thereby assuring his place on the ballot and potentially splitting the "progressive" vote between him and Bump, in September.
