Why bicyclists need to obey traffic signals
Remember one of our endless discussions a few days back when some bicyclists said they shouldn't have to stop for red lights?
Hedgehog reports:
... While escorting a couple of grad students to my car to go to a testing session, I waited patiently at the curb in front of MIT's main building until the chirping walk signal appeared, stepped into the incredibly well-marked and signaled crosswalk, and was promptly clobbered by some young woman on a bicycle. POW. Like something out of a cartoon.
Fortunately I seem to have escaped without major injury, although my shoulder joint is awfully sore from where I attempted to stop 160+ pounds of woman and bicycle moving at 25 MPH with my puny girl-bicep. OWIE. ...

The downside of increased bicycle ridership
Steve S., who often bicycles to work near City Hall, is glad to see more and more people on bikes these days. But, he cautions, if you bike to work, you need to find a place to take a shower before you show up in the office.

Boston City Council to consider bike-sharing program
At-large Councilor John Connolly is calling for a hearing to consider creation of a European-style bike-sharing program in Boston. The Menino administration has already begun looking at ways of increasing bicycle usage in Boston.
Connolly says the city should look at options from letting people use communal bikes for free to a ZipCar-like bike-rental program for people who need a bike for a short period of time.

A guy in a Ferrari. Drinking a Starbucks. Talking on an iPhone.
And that's why he couldn't signal to let Sean Roche, bicycling behind him on Beacon Street in Brookline, know that he was about to cut in front of him to get a parking space. No free hands, you see, sorry about that, old chap.

Report racist road rager to RMV?
Adam Pieniazek is enjoying a nice bike ride on Columbia Road in Dorchester when some fat putz in a rustbucket begins slamming his horn and demanding Pieniazek pull over to let him through. Pieniazek did pull to the side, but didn't stop, which only further enraged the guy. He reports that the guy, who appeared to be Puerto Rican or Dominican, finally exhausted his supply of expletives and yelled:
Do you know where you are white boy?
Pieniazek, a Dot rat, finally lost him at a light - but not until he took down his license-plate number. He wonders: Should he use the handy motorist-complaint form he downloaded?

Maybe the mayor has Commerce Insurance
Because he was awfully calm after a woman hit him while he was riding his bike on River Street in Hyde Park last week:
He fell off his bike and suffered a small cut to his ankle, but told the flustered motorist to "just get going, and don't be late for work," Joyce said.

Boston bicyclist banana beaning
Memo to Massholes in delivery trucks: You might not want to throw bananas at bicyclists when your company's name, phone number and Web site are all listed on the side of your vehicle. And, yes, we're looking at you, Boston Organ and Piano.
Hat tip to Brad Searles.

Glad to be alive
My friend took the time to share it with his friends, and so I am taking the time to share it with you! The following is a copy of his post.
Hello friends,
Late Tuesday afternoon I was riding my bike and was hit by a cab. I was in the bike lane, going 20-25 mph when out of nowhere the cabbie took a hard left, cut me off and I hit him head-on. It happened so fast I didn't have time to brake, swerve or yell. The only thought I had was "#%^&, I'm dead!"
