CommonWealth Magazine surveys next Tuesday's special election to replace state Sen. Joe Boncore, which pits Boston City Councilor Lydia Edwards against Revere School Committee Member Anthony D’Ambrosio. The district includes East Boston, the North End, Beacon Hill, Chinatown, Revere, Winthrop and a bit of Cambridge.

New Coast Guard cutter

The Coast Guard goes before the Boston Conservation Commission next week for permission to replace two piers and install new floating docks at its base off Hanover and Commercial streets to allow it to dock six new larger cutters currently under construction in Louisiana. Read more.

The Ring reports the death on Monday of Tony DeMarco, "the wild-swinging Boston brawler who won the world welterweight championship in 1955" - at the Garden, no less. Read more.

Base of former Christopher Columbus statue in his epnonymous North End park

A concerned citizen filed a 311 complaint about the protest graffiti on the base where Christopher Columbus used to stand in the North End until he was decapitated last year.

With no statue left to deface or knock down, the protester could only spray paint messages on the base and on the sign that tells you the name of the park.

City Councilor and state-senate candidate Lydia Edwards yesterday apologized for her comments on Wednesday, which many took as a defense in support of Columbus in her current and possible future districts, which have significant Italian-American populations. Read more.

Gala

Rolando Gala's robbery attire has come down a bit over the past decade, police say: Where once he was dubbed the "Backstreet Bandit" for robbing banks clad in a fedora and button-down shirts, like the Back Street Boys, he robbed two banks on Hanover Street in the North End last month wearing nothing on his head, two untucked T-shirts, a pair of ill fitting jeans and sneakers. At least Affleck wore a nun mask. Boston Police are looking for an unmasked bearded guy with a plastic CVS bag for this morning's holdups of two Hanover Street bank branches - 11 years to the day after the release of "The Town," which focused on an armored-car robbery on Salem Street. Read more.

Buddy Spagnuolo

Family and friends of Robert "Buddy" Spagnuolo gathered at St Leonard's Church on Hanover Street this morning for a funeral mass to celebrate the life of the 90-year-old North End resident, who died on Aug. 30. And then, before they left for his burial at Holy Cross Cemetery in Malden, they further celebrated his life with an unusual daytime fireworks display above the North End: Read more.

Massimo Tiberi, owner of Arya Trattoria on Hanover Street, posts Instagram photos of celebrities posing with him. So when Kim Janey walked in last night, he had a pic snapped and posted it - and then fairly quickly took it down because neither of them had a mask on, which proved a tad embarrassing given that Boston's indoor mask mandate, which Janey herself announced, went into effect Friday morning.
