From SNN 23 - 9/23/14 - Warren Wows Tufts, Despite Protests

by Jane Regan

Somerville, MA, September 23, 2014 – Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) wowed a crowd of some 500 students, faculty and neighbors on September 15 with stories from her youth, but she also issued dire warnings about the big banks, the lack of investment in education and the “hollowing out of the middle class.”

The senator was also protested by those who came to criticize her stand on the most recent chapter of the Israel-Gaza conflict. Once inside, however, Warren seemed to back away slightly from statements she made in August, saying that Palestinians had a right to self-defense.

In a national drive to reduce gun violence, No More Names, a project of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, began a nationwide tour on June 14 in Newtown CT on the six-month anniversary of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary.

At today's rally at Faneuil Hall in Boston, speakers included Rev. Kim Odom, whose son Steven was 13 when he was shot and killed in Dorchester in 2007, Mayor Tom Menino and Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Scott Brown campaigned as a moderate independent but if you look at his record, he's a Republican who voted with Republicans 90% of the time in the US Senate until Elizabeth Warren announced her candidacy, and then he voted with Republicans on votes of importance 76% of the time.

No matter why you think he lost, you must consider whether the second most bi-partisan senator was still too conservative for Massachusetts.

WarrenYou can call her Senator Warren now.

As more votes come in, WHDH is calling Elizabeth Warren the winner over incumbent Scott Brown. Among other things, Warren becomes the state's first woman senator.

Salon took a stopwatch to the debate tape and found that Scott Brown spoke 23 minutes and 40 seconds to Elizabeth Warren's 18 minutes and 15 seconds.

Both Andy Hiller of WHDH and the Morning Joe crew noted how Scott Brown is tiptoeing right up to bullying Warren. Character judgments aside, he is blowing a big hole in his 'Nice Guy' bona fides.

On September 7, Republican Scott Brown commented on the new jobs report and claimed he "will be a fighter for jobs." But his record as US Senator says otherwise, which makes me wonder, how does Scott Brown fit into the Republican strategy of obstruction and will the press hold him accountable?

John Carroll notes what he calls the "chin-strokerati" coverage of the nascent US Senate race by the Globe and other media outlets - they're only writing for other in-the-knowers, not the majority of us. For example, the Globe's constant references to the "now familiar" story of Warren's childhood in Okalahoma:

Ask ten people in the 351 cities and towns of Massachusetts about Elizabeth Warren and 1) 98% won’t know who she is; 2) 99.99% won't know the first thing about her.

OK, so Dems get predictably outraged about Scott Brown's public desire to not see Elizabeth Warren naked, but Republicans might want to find a better way to respond than praising Brown's decision to pose nude for a sex-advice rag as an example of an agonizing decision he courageously made.

Her announcement. Maybe now that she's officially in the race, she'll stop treating all of her campaign stops, such as her formal announcement at the Broadway T stop this morning, as state secrets (reporters were told in advance, of course, but only on the condition they not tell anybody).

"In a posting on a website supportive of the Democratic Party," is as close as our Paper of Record gets to helping its readers read Warren's post in its entirety.

There's a boomlet on the left drumstick of the body politic for the Harvard professor turned Washington consumer advocate.

The Herald, meanwhile, reports Salem Mayor Kimberley Driscoll is considering a bid.

President Obama appoints Elizabeth Warren to establish and lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

This is the boldest step Obama's taken so far to rein in the big Wall Street banks. And it's a major victory for grassroots progressives who rallied for Warren. MoveOn.org made a video of Warren's greatest hits from her appearances on the "Daily Show" and a list of five cool facts about her.
