A Dorchester man accused of shooting up a schoolyard as kids played in a playground next door on Sunday was ordered held in jail at his arraignment yesterday, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Prosecutors had asked for $100,000 bail for Semaj Leary. Judge Debra DelVecchio set bail at $10,000, but agreed with prosecutors to revoke his bail for an open assault-and-battery charge - for which he is scheduled for trial in June.

The Boston Police Department reports Officer John Moynihan has been released from the hospital and is home in "serious but improving" condition.

Boston Police and the Suffolk County District Attorney's office today released this video showing Boston Officer John Moynihan being shot in the face point blank during a traffic stop in Roxbury on March 27. His shooter, Angelo West, was fatally shot.

Police Commissioner William Evans said today that Moynihan continues to recover.

Pink taser

An 11-year-old student at the Higginson/Lewis K-8 School on Walnut Avenue in Roxbury is facing suspension, but no criminal charges, for bringing the stun gun and a folding pocket knife to school on Wednesday, Boston Police report.

Police say the girl brought the weapons to school to impress her friends - which is what gave her away: A teacher heard the zapping sound of the taser being turned on and went to investigate.

Christopher the Lion at Franklin Park Zoo

Zoo New England announced today that Christopher the Lion has died. He was 21.

Christopher, born in Florida, had lived at Franklin Park since 2001 - and exceeded the average lifespan of a lion in captivity by more than four years.

State Police report what started out as a traffic stop at Prentiss and Parker streets in Roxbury this afternoon ended with the driver and his passenger under arrest.

State Police say a trooper initially pulled Humberto David, 25, of Cambridge over at Parker and Prentiss streets because his car's windows seemed to be excessively tinted and because David did not signal when making a turn around 1:45 p.m.

After they were stopped, a search of the car showed a gun - which turned out to be stolen - and "a quantity of marijuana."

Eight hours of shoveling marked on a cone on Ruthven Street in Roxbury

An annoyed citizen complains about the space savers still in place on Ruthven Street, including this one, marked by somebody who apparently thinks eight hours of shoveling is worth a couple months' free parking.

A gun battle between occupants of two cars ended with one person from each vehicle going to Boston Medical Center - one in bad enough shape to have the homicide unit called in just in case.

Police rushed to the area of Woodward Avenue and George Street on reports of gunfire shortly before 11:30 p.m. Officers found shell casings on Woodward Avenue.

Boston Police report that John Moynihan - shot point blank in the face Friday night underwent several hours of surgery today to remove the bullet from his neck.

Officer Moynihan is currently listed in stable and improving condition and is expected to be moved out of the Intensive Care Unit in the coming days.

Angelo West

Police Commissioner William Evans today identified the man fatally shot in a confrontation with officers at Humboldt Avenue and Ruthven Street last night as Angelo West, 41, of Hyde Park.

Police say West had a long and violent record. He was convicted of shooting at a Boston officer and a state trooper in the Theater District in 2001: His first shot missed and then his gun jammed.

A Boston Police officer was shot around 6:40 p.m. at Humboldt Avenue and Ruthven Street. A second ambulance was summoned for a suspect, also shot, but he was declared dead at the scene.

Police Commissioner William Evans said the officer, John T. Moynihan, 34, was shot under the right eye, is in a medically induced coma at Boston Medical Center and is "fighting for his life right now." He asked people to pray for him.

Trash fire at Norfolk Avenue transfer station

Brian D'Amico followed firefighters to a blaze in a giant trash heap at a trash transfer station on Norfolk Avenue in Roxbury this afternoon.

Shortly before 4 p.m., somebody on Ruggles Street started firing a gun into the Annunciation project. Nobody was hit.

Police are looking for a black man, 25 to 30, clad all in black and carrying a black gun.

Orange Line window smasher at Ruggles

Transit Police report arresting Abdulkadir Abbas, 33, for allegedly punching out a window on an Orange Line train at Ruggles last night.

Police say Abbas punched the window around 10:15 p.m., then got on the train - where passengers promptly pointed him out to arriving officers.

Abbas is scheduled for arraignment today in Roxbury District Court on a charge of malicious destruction of property over $250 - police say it will cost $430 to replace the window.

Angeliea Brown, 34, of Dorchester, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter today for the August, 2013, stabbing death of Winston Fields, 73, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Prosecutors had originally charged Brown with first-degree murder, for which a conviction would have meant life without parole. Instead, she's looking at 15 to 18 years in state prison.
