From Blue Mass. Group: Boston Mayoral Debate Tonight

By adamg - 8/31/09 - 8:42 pm

John Keith e-mails from DotOut's mayoral forum tonight:

Guy from Dorchester stood up and said the Mayor was getting a free pass from [the gay and lesbian] community, that he doesn't march [in the Southie parade] but walks down the side of the street. The Mayor shouted out "that's a lie and you know it!" Then the guy said "wow, that's the first time I've been called a liar by a mayoral candidate" and the Mayor responded "because that's what you are!"

Ed. question: Anybody know who's right?

In an hour-long debate this morning on Touch FM, District 7 City Councilor Chuck Turner and challenger Carlos Henriquez, differed on how a city councilor could make life better in the Roxbury, the Fenway and the South End.

It's 8 a.m. on Touch 106.1 FM, Henriquez tweets. If you can't pick up the station, they simulcast on the Web.

It only took 13 years or so, but the Globe finally got around to writing a story about the personal dictatorship of Caudillo and aspiring Mayor for Life Thomas Menino.

Sniff between and within the lines of the story and you catch the whiff of corruption.

David Bernstein is put out that Sam Yoon and Michael Flaherty both used "Shipping Up to Boston" on their music face-off today on WFNX:

... Maybe [Yoon] was trying to be funny, using the Dropkicks to beat the Irishman. I don't know; all I know is that they USED THE SAME GODDAM SONG!!!!! ...

Adam Pieniazek reviews Michael "Menino's a Walkman and I'm an iPod" Flaherty's social-media strategy, gives him a big Fail; in fact, he says ol' fuddy-duddy Menino is using Twitter better:

... What's worse, is that Flaherty doesn't understand a relatively simple piece of technology like Twitter. What does it mean when the 80's cell-phone uses a new piece of technology better than the iPhone? ...

That's the goal of Think Politics, which is launching this month. City Council candidates Tito Jackson (at large) and Carlos Henriquez (Roxbury) are among the founders. The Facebook invitation for its first meeting (which was yesterday) has more info.

Mayoral candidate Sam Yoon wants City Hall to take a page from banks and stay open past normal business hours at least once a week so people who work for a living could have a chance to conduct city business. In a statement, he says:

One of the most appealing solutions is to shift hours to offer later services on Wednesday and close earlier on Fridays. We would stay open until 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and close at 2:30 p.m. on Fridays. We would also be able to move the regular City Council meetings to Wednesday evening to allow more people to attend.

Last night, our old landline phone (we stil have a wall-mounted rotary-dial phone in the kitchen) rang. It wasn't somebody calling with some horrible news (that seems to be the main reason for the wired phone these days), so I relaxed and agreed to take a poll on the upcoming mayoral elections. Lady said she was calling from Pioneer Marketing Research, which she emphasized was an "independent" research firm, so how could I say no?

For the most part, the detailed questions seemed fair, even made me think a bit (what is the most important issue for me, and why? If the election were held today, whom would I vote for? Etc.) But then, toward the end of the call, I was asked a series of interesting questions.

My call-waiting beeps and my caller id says it is

who I do not know. I let it go to voice mail. The message left on my answering machine reveals it is political robo call by Doug Bennett who, by the way, is 100% certain that he will be the next city councilor-at-large.

I'm not opposed to Doug's candidacy, heck I don't even know him, I'm just against robo calls made under someone else's name.

Former state rep and mayoral candidate Mel King said today he'll be voting for Sam Yoon this fall:

We need to raise our expectations of what the city can do for young people. The school-to-prison rate is too high and the graduation rate is too low. Sam offers leadership driven by people and communities, the kind of leadership that will engage residents in improving the health and education of all the city's children.

Defaced Flaherty sign

A couple weeks ago, somebody sliced up a Flaherty sign at Baker and Centre streets in West Roxbury (but, gosh, left the Menino signs across the street alone). The Flaherty campaign replaced the sign. Based on what we saw yesterday, above, the vandal didn't waste any time returning.

Around the same time, somebody defaced a Yoon sign on Poplar Street in Roslindale. The Yoon campaign replaced the sign. Based on what Daniel Farnkoff saw last week, below, the vandal didn't waste any time returning.

What's interesting is that the spray pattern on both signs is very similar - look at the swirls on the left. So we're probably dealing with somebody from the Parkway area - who knows how to get from Poplar to Baker. And given which signs got hit, we're probably dealing with somebody who supports one of the other candidates, specifically one who isn't Kevin McCrea, I'm thinking.
