So instead, just head to Somerville on Saturday. EatBoston and Sugarbomber.com have put together an ice-cream smackdown at which local ice-cream makers will compete to see who has the best relief for the heat. The $2 suggested donation goes to a scholarship fund for an area high-school musician.

Friendly's discovers customers don't like sitting around all day

Opens a "Friendly's Express" in Mansfield that allegedly serves up food at the same speed as normal restaurants, instead of at the glacial pace most Friendly's customers have learned to expect, Channel 4 reports.

Of course, I had to rush home to dish up this news: Roslindale Square is getting another ice-cream place. Jimmies, opening soon on Corinth Street, next to Imperial Kitchen, will also serve food on buns.

Currently, Roslindale residents who need ice cream have to travel down to Belgrade for Select Cafe, the former Emack and Bolios. The cafe, which is more of a coffeehouse that serves ice cream, is currently redecorating a bit - and no longer requires people to ask for a key at the counter for the restroom.

Little shop of boozers: Police say minors liquored up at Mass. Ave. ice-cream parlor

Boston Police report busting up a soiree at Wheeler's Cafe and Ice Cream Bar on Mass. Ave. around 12:50 this morning after officers discovered members of the under-21 set consuming "beer and shots of alcohol:"

Officers observed the windows of the store to be "blacked out" for they were covered with sheets of black nylon, giving the illusion that the store was closed. Officers entered the store and discovered 60 to 70 individuals congregating within, consuming alcohol and listening to music emanating from a large DJ system.

Upon further investigation, it was learned that a large number of the individuals were under the legal drinking age of Twenty-One. Partygoers informed officers that they received a wristband for admittance after paying a Ten-Dollar cover charge. Once inside, they were served beer & shots of alcohol. They further stated that they learned of the establishment through the Wheeler's Ice Cream Parlor's Facebook page.

Hmm, for some reason, the ad for the event is gone from the joint's Facebook page today, although you can still see photos from past dances at the shop there and here. The "micro-creamery" sells only vegan ice cream, including a line of alcohol-flavored treats.

Police say Eric Marcelino, 27, of Acushnet, and Rodeye Mckiedhem, 41, of Cambridge, were arrested and charged with disturbing the peace, procuring alcohol for minors and selling/furnishing alcoholic beverages to persons under the age of 21.

Ice-cream issues in Arlington

Shane Curcuru reports that Arlington is in the grips of an ice-cream shortage:

... The local Stop & Shop on Mass Av in Arlington has one of its two frozen food aisles unplugged and emptied. No ice cream nor frozen novelties were in evidence throughout the store. ... Stop and Shop also has planned for this contingency, and lists four other stores within a 5 mile radius of zip 02476; note however that time of day and traffic conditions may require you to plan for extra time and bring your own cooler and icepacks to ensure the proper temperature conditions of your purchases. ...
