Wicked Local Allston/Brighton reports a man was nabbed at the self-checkout line at the Western Avenue Shaw's hitting the banana price for the red grapes he'd put on the scale.

Boston Police report arresting two Malden men for shoplifting at the Prudential Center Shaw's around 6 p.m. yesterday.

Police add, however, that Meelad Jalal, 18, and Burgan Rasul, 22, did not attempt to sneak out of the store with anything. Instead, police say, the two, along with a third man, went to the store's prepared-meals area, grabbed some food, walked up to the store's second level and chowed down. Jalal and Rasul, however, were stopped when they tried to leave without paying, according to police, who say that based on the remains, the trio consumed "an order of French fries, a plate of fried chicken, various pastries, biscuits and approximately 2 lbs. of steak tips."

Police add the third guy "screwed," before officers arrived, which explains the BPDNews headline: "Two Arrested for Chewing and Not Screwing."

Graham watched in amazement as a guy wheeled up to the register at the Packard's Corner Shaw's tonight with 18 gallons of milk, 8 each of whole and 2%, one each of skim and 1%. Plus, of course, toilet paper. He adds:

While Stop & Shop workers were busy ratifying a new contract this weekend, workers at Shaw's produce warehouse in Methuen were going out on strike, Channel 4 reports. That could mean you'll see only wilted lettuce at your local Shaw's and Star Market - assuming you cross the picket lines the workers could be putting up.

Boston Police report a guy who made off with a salad from the salad bar at the Pru Shaw's yesterday tried to hold a woman up on Huntington Avenue even as he was stuffing the salad into this mouth.

A security guard who was trailing Hector Tetzaguic, 38, of Dorchester, grabbed him and held him until police arrived, BPD says. He was charged with shoplifting and attempted larceny from a person.

No, it's not rapidly increasing food prices. It's that we're all in a food rut:

Shaw's Supermarkets said Tuesday it has forged a partnership with America's Test Kitchen that aims to get shoppers out of what they call a "food rut."

West Bridgewater, Mass.-based Shaw's said the initiative, called "Get Inspired," was designed specifically to stop New Englanders from sleep-shopping through the grocery aisles, cooking the same uninspired meals, week after week. ...
