Update, 11 p.m.: Expressway in Dorchester at a complete standstill in both directions; six cars collided on the Zakim.

Drivers unaccustomed to powder-covered roads, coupled with a lack of salt, means spinouts and crashes are beginning to pile up. A Hummer ran up into a house on Lake Street in Brighton, but did no major damage to either house or people. Police shut Everett Street in Brighton after cars started playing pinball. Boston DPW salt trucks began blasting out of their yards to treat roads around 10:45 p.m.

Ed. note: I held off on raising the French Toast Alert based on a forecast that called for everything to melt by morning as temperatures rose into the 40s. I should have known better.

Court: Judges have the right to reduce plea-bargained sentences in certain circumstances

The Supreme Judicial Court today upheld rulings from lower-court judges that gave two defendants less severe sentences than they had themselves agreed to.

In a 2010 case in Brighton District Court, Judge David Weingarten reduced Marcos Rodriguez's 2 1/2-year sentence for drug possession with intent to distribute to 1 year after he realized Rodriguez had agreed to plead guilty to possession of one type of drug when he was actually guilty of possession of another type of drug that carried less severe potential penalties.

Man stable after early morning scooter crash

Boston Police report finding a man lying on the ground at Allston and Kelton streets around 4:30 a.m. today.

BPD Officer Eddy Chrispin reports the man was taken to Brigham and Women's Hospital with a head injury, but is in stable condition. He said the man was Hispanic but that no other information about him was available. he added investigators are still not sure what happened or whether another vehicle was involved.

Honey Fitz says get out and vote. In Boston, seven people are running for four at-large council seats and there are contested district races in 2 (South Boston, South End and Chinatown), 3 (Dorchester) and 7 (Roxbury).

In District 3, where O'Toole and Baker and battling to replace outgoing incumbent Feeney, the Dorchester Reporter is tweeting the latest voting numbers and other observations.

In District 2, Lee vs. Linehan, David Bernstein calculates that turnout in precincts Lee won in the preliminary are up dramatically, but that turnout in precincts Linehan won are up even more so.

Bus crisis: 200 students at one Brighton school miss buses when BPS changes pickup times without telling anybody

Boston School Committee member Mary Tamer said she knew something was wrong this morning when she started getting one e-mail after another from parents at the Edison School wondering where their children's buses were.

Tamer said at a School Committee meeting tonight nobody had bothered to tell the students or the parents their scheduled pick-up times had been changed as the school department continues to struggle to get kids to school on time. It's the latest snafu in what committee Chairman Gregory Groover called "a crisis" that persists nine weeks into the school year.
