Another fine mess on the B Line

One of the last trains on the B Line overnight, running through the Commonwealth Avenue and Chestnut Hill Avenue intersection around 1:30 AM, hopped the tracks. This normally wouldn't be a big deal, as it happens pretty regularly with the new Breda trains. Except, this time it hopped the track right into a power pole. The shorted power lines lit the train car on fire. About thirty people on board were able to get off safely but it's taken all morning and then some for officials to untangle the mess and realign the wheels to put the train back on the tracks to move it out of the way. As of 6 AM, the train is still in the middle of the intersection and the B Line is being bussed from BC to Babcock Street.

Of course, this all began over 4 hours ago, but it is just now "breaking news" on all of the local news agencies and television stations without a single article to link even at this hour.

3-year old found wandering around Brigham Circle at 3 a.m.

Fortunately, a passing motorist spotted the tot, picked him up and dialed 911, Boston Police report.

And what was he doing wandering around by himself then?

Around 4:15am, officers responded to Kempton St. for a report of a missing three-year-old child. There, officers spoke to a mother who reported that she had left her three year old at home with her 18 year old daughter around 11pm and came home around 3am to find her front door open and her three year old missing from his bed. The caller stated that she looked around for her son unsuccessfully and then called the police.

Detectives and DSS are now on the case.

Meanwhile, police report that carousers who party together stay together. Around 2:20 a.m., police told a group of people causing a disturbance at 157 Brighton Ave. in Allston to move along. Apparently, they moved along to the South End, where, around 4:30 a.m., police responded to a report of a fight at 661 Tremont St. They say they found the same group of people:

Officers gave the group numerous orders to disperse, all of which were met with negative results. Officers continued to monitor the group which continued to move along but maintained their disorderly conduct. One particular individual was being louder and causing a scene. This individual was yelling and being confrontational with officers despite their orders for her to be on her way.

And that's how a lass from Lynn got pulled in.

Police charge driver in Packard's Corner fireball case

Boston Police report they have filed a variety of charges against Timothy Newton, 38, of Revere, related to yesterday's multi-block, multi-vehicle pileup that ended with exploding cars and the shutdown of the Packard's Corner intersection.

Newton, driver of the medical-supply truck police that careened into Packard's Corner, is charged with leaving the scene of an accident (property damage), leaving the scene of an accident (personal injury) and driving to endanger. Oh, yeah, and his driver's license has been suspended, which should be nothing new to Newton, whom Channel 4 reports has a rather lengthy set of notations in his RMV record, none of them good. Newton said he blacked out just before the accidents.

UPDATE: Driver charged.

A box truck driver says he blacked out around 7:15 this morning, causing a multi-vehicle collision that ended in explosions and the shutdown of the intersection of Comm. Ave. and Brighton Ave. - and, of course, Green Line service through the area.

Channel 4 has video of a car fireball. Helicopter video. Ilovesashimi posts a couple of photos. Harry Mattison posts a couple as well. Channel 5 reports.

Meanwhile, an 18-wheeler hit the BU Bridge while on Storrow Drive but managed to get off the road without causing major damage, according to our friends at Traffic on the 3s.

Boston Police report arresting two 30something guys (one from Allston, one from Haverhill) for knocking over eight newspaper boxes in a row at Brighton and Harvard avenues early Saturday:

When asked to explain their actions, one of the suspects stated, "Don't you guys have anything better to do?"

The officers agreed with their logic and promptly found something better to do - taking them down to District 14 for some booking.

Meanwhile, police report arresting a Roxbury teen on charges he held a woman up at gunpoint Thursday evening at 48 Edgewood St.

The Daily Free Press reports District 14 detectives are using a research tool called Craigslist to break up Allston prostitution rings, many with ties to the Asian communities of Flushing, N.Y. Among their captures: The "Queen of Craigslist."

"Some of the advertisers are getting smart and use locations [in or] near Brookline, Newton, Cambridge and surrounding communities instead of Allston or Brighton, due to all of the arrests being made," [Sgt. James] Fong said in an email.
