UPDATE: State Police report the woman died about an hour later at Mass. General. They identified her only as a 36-year-old Rhode Island resident who got out of her car on the upper level.

Witnesses on the upper deck of the Tobin Bridge watched a man get out of his vehicle and jump around 5:30 p.m., according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.

The State Police Underwater Recovery Unit recovered his body in the water about 30 minutes later, the DA's office says, adding investigators are now working to identify him.

His death comes about 2 1/2 weeks after another man was talked out of jumping after causing a ten-mile inbound backup.

Inbound traffic on Rte. 1 over the Tobin Bridge was backed up ten miles this morning when police ordered the bridge shut so they could try to talk down a man threatening to jump. State Police crisis negotiators rushed to the scene and talked him out of it shortly after 7 a.m.

Boston Police tweet a man succeeded in jumping off the Tobin Bridge around noon today. AlertNewEngland tweets State Police managed to get him out of the water alive.

Boston fire crews responded to the Tobin Bridge around 4:15 p.m. on reports somebody was threatening to jump from the upper level of the bridge; The Globe reports Chelsea police were able to talk the man down before he actually jumped.

State, Boston and Massport police and fire boats responded to the scene; the Boston Fire Department dive team was called in as well, just in case.

Rte. 1 southbound was shut down.

The last jump from the bridge was early on June 18. That person didn't make it.

His body was recovered in the water off Charlestown around 6 a.m. What appears to be his abandoned car was found on the bridge.

Boston Police tweet he tried jumping from the bridge around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, but wound up in State Police custody instead. Local 718 tweets he tried jumping from the lower level.

Local 718 tweets that two people just jumped off the Tobin; they were fished out of the water.

UPDATE: The Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports the two men - one 35, from Revere and one 31, from Bedford, NH - jumped from the bridge's upper deck around 5:30 p.m. Troopers aboard a State Police patrol boat got the two out of the water and brought them to the North End Coast Guard station, from which they were transported to Mass. General. Both suffered serious injuries and have been unable to talk to investigators yet.

State troopers closed the rightmost inbound lane of the upper deck, where a car belonging to a Bradford relative was found. Traffic was slowed but not stopped during the response. Witness statements and additional evidence from the scene suggests that the men jumped in a shared suicide bid, but motive and execution remain under investigation by State Police detectives assigned to [DA Dan] Conley's office.

Tobin Bridge closure

For almost three hours now, the northbound Tobin Bridge has been completely closed to traffic. Boston.com has been reporting "an emergency", and WBZ Traffic has been reporting "due to police activity".

Perhaps we're dealing with another Mr. Stuart here. That would explain the cloak of silence surrounding whatever incident has happened on the bridge.
