Just in time for snow, Boston has launched its Adopt-a-Hydrant program, in which you promise to shovel out a specific hydrant after a storm, like, say, the ones we're supposed to get tonight and Saturday.

Meanwhile, both Brookline and Cambridge have referral programs to match residents with snow with teens with shovels.

Update, 11 p.m.: Expressway in Dorchester at a complete standstill in both directions; six cars collided on the Zakim.

Drivers unaccustomed to powder-covered roads, coupled with a lack of salt, means spinouts and crashes are beginning to pile up. A Hummer ran up into a house on Lake Street in Brighton, but did no major damage to either house or people. Police shut Everett Street in Brighton after cars started playing pinball. Boston DPW salt trucks began blasting out of their yards to treat roads around 10:45 p.m.

Ed. note: I held off on raising the French Toast Alert based on a forecast that called for everything to melt by morning as temperatures rose into the 40s. I should have known better.

Suspicious white powder at Gloucester train station

The Globe reports the T will run fewer trains on snow days this winter, in an effort to give crews a better chance at dealing with snow and ice when the weather outside is frightful. They even have a new Web page to let you know about winter cancellations - which will be on both subway and commuter-rail lines.

UPDATE: MEMA reports 670,000 customers without power as of noon.

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency tweets that as of 7 a.m., 656,688 electricity customers in Massachusetts are without power.
