Downed power lines somewhere in the Canton area mean no Amtrak service between Boston and New York and, of course, massive delays on the Providence/Stoughton Line that have left stranded commuters hoping for the buses the T is promising.

Redistricting Olympics

Common Cause Massachusetts is hosting a Redistricting Olympics this summer. We will be taking citizen drawn Congressional, State House, and State Senate maps all summer, evaluating them, declaring a winner, giving out prizes and submitting the winning maps to the MA Legislative Redistricting Committee for consideration.

The purpose of the redistricting Olympics is threefold: to educate the public about the steps in the redistricting process, to initiate public participation in the political arena, and to pressure the legislature to draw the districts so that the citizens are appropriately represented.

Help show the legislature that redistricting is about our interests, not theirs. By participating in our redistricting Olympics and learning how to draw your own fair districts, you can acquire the tools you need to expose attempts by public officials to politicize the state’s new legislative maps.

WBUR reports on the planned IPO of Dunkin' Brands and notes that the filing states there is one Dunk's for every 9,700 people in New England and New York. That ratio has got to be way lower within 128, right?

Too many deer in the Blue Hills?

Anecdotal evidence (more dead deer by the side of the road) seems to indicate a growing deer population in the large reservation just south of the city. The Friends of the Blue Hills reports the state Department of Conservation and Recreation is getting ready to do some serious studying to determine if there are more deer than the reservation can support and, if so, what to do about them. The process could take several years - one thing the DCR might do is fence in some small pieces of forest to keep deer out and compare the plant growth on either side of the fences.

Blue Hills Reservation gets bigger

Friends of the Blue Hills reports the state recently bought 57 acres of land between the Blue Hill Country Club and Rte. 138 by the Ponkopoag Golf Club - for $198,000:

In a year or so, when construction of a sewer line is complete, you'll be able to explore a new red maple swamp, open marshland and pine-oak upland.

Canton cops crack copper caper, crook couple caught

Canton - A Braintree man and Holbrook woman who allegedly tried to scam copper from a Canton company on May 5 have been arrested and charged with attempting to commit larceny for goods worth over $250.

Court says Canton can't stop mega-project just over the line in Westwood

The Supreme Judicial Court yesterday tossed out Canton's lawsuit against the proposed Westwood Station project in neighboring Westwood, ruling the town failed to file its complaints on time.

Acela trains and Jack Daniels - a bad combination

It could have been a lot worse for this Canton resident, struck by a speeding Acela train that hit him while he was crossing the tracks trying to get to HoneyDew Donuts™:

Canton Journal reports:

O'Brien added that Daniels was conscious when he saw him after the accident, and that he was looking for his teeth that apparently had been knocked out of his mouth during the accident.

Fire destroys Canton apartments, gives cop chance to play SOB

Channel 7 reports 12 families were forced out of the three-story building today.

Pahkcah02, who lives in the same complex, reports what happened when she returned from a trip to the supermarket to find the road to her place blocked:

... I rolled down my window, explained to the sergeant that I lived in that complex and he proceeded to scream at me for about 2 minutes before I drove away. After safely pulling over to the side of the road, I called the Canton police non-emergency line and was informed that there was large fire in the building next to mine.

Obviously I was concerned for people's safety. Having said that, it would've been nice if the folks over at Canton emergency services (the ones who recently demanded an additional 2.5% of my money - obviously none of this money went to pay for sensitivity training) could've explained everything to me before a full-blown panic attack set in. ...
