Roads in eastern Massachusetts became parking lots this morning. An 18-wheeler ran off the road on 93 south in Dorchester, a bad crash shut Hyde Park Avenue at Metropolitan Avenue and the Jamaicaway ground to a standstill.

Hailstones the size of gumballs

An astonished Government Center worker e-mailed about the hail around 3:30 p.m. To be more exact, he wrote:

HAILSTONES THE SIZE OF GUMBALLS IN GOV'T CENTER!!!

At least one hailstone the size of a golf ball came down on Washington Street in Downtown Crossing - look at the size of that thing at the end of this video.

Elsewhere, reports poured in end-of-days torrents and pea-sized hail from the Fenway to Chinatown.

A state trooper and police dog were in a cruiser hit by lightning on Perimeter Road at Logan Airport. Both are reported OK, however.

A tree came down on Dartmouth Street near Warren in the South End.

And that answer would be "No," assuming the question was "Can I walk through Copley Square with an open umbrella today?"

On a noontime walk to Back Bay station (from City Hall; yeah, I'm that kind of nuts), I took refuge on the steps of Trinity Church, and watched as countless umbrellas got turned inside out and countless people simply gave up and closed their umbrellas rather than fighting a losing battle with the wind.

Now THAT was a storm

We got caught in it as we drove along the Fens: Frequent, vivid lightning flashes, rain coming down in sheets, people just walking slowly because they'd gotten to that point where they realized they were so soaked trying to rush was pointless.

And only 15 minutes earlier, we were busy enjoying a rainbow right over Faulkner Hospital.

The last half of the run was either exhilarating or terrifying, depending on the moment. Flashes and crashes were happening every 10 seconds or so, some closer to me than others. I consciously ran on the side of the street with the shorter trees, convincing myself that was the smart thing to do (is it?). With about a mile to go there was a strike so close I saw the blue light in my face and the the lightning struck a tree about 100 yards away.

The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for most of the Boston area starting at 6 p.m., with the possibility we could get up to 5 inches of rain in spots:

THIS MAY RESULT IN SIGNIFICANT RAPID FLOODING OF URBAN AND POOR DRAINAGE AREAS...INCLUDING ROADWAYS AND UNDERPASSES. ISOLATED SMALL STREAM FLOODING IS ALSO POSSIBLE.

OK, the NWS doesn't name Somerville specifically, but it didn't fare very well the last time we got a ton of rain all at once.

Frog Pond closed to waders

NotifyBoston alerts us that Frog Pond is closed today because of yesterday's rain - too much debris and dirt got dumped into the pond by the storms. Could be open tomorrow, but call first: 617-635-2120.
