City provides bonus trash pickup in South Boston

The Globe reports a special city crew today removed:

220 milk crates, orange cones, lawn chairs, recycling bins, and other random objects that residents were using to stake claim to parking spots.

This is not South Boston. This is my street in Roslindale, where the folks across the way seem to add a new cone every year:

Kirk Williamson's video, above, shows his commute this morning from Cape Ann to Beverly. Not the most exciting thing in the world once you realize he's figured out how to drive down 128 in the snow while holding a camera and so won't be sliding off the road - until the last 15 seconds or so, when you will see something that will make you burst out laughing because it is just so ludicrously absurd.

Michael's train into Boston on the Worcester line was more than two hours late yesterday - which includes 90 minutes just sitting on the tracks in Newton:

We're told the train's breaks can't handle the cold, cold temperatures of a Massachusetts Winter. Eventually, a later train has to push us into South Station. ...

The worst parts of my commute this morning

Sure, the fact that the West Roxbury Parkway was wall-to-wall car from the VFW Parkway to Putterham this morning was annoying, but that was nothing compared to a) getting to my car from our front porch and b) getting from my car to the front door of our office. The office parking lot was particularly bad because it looked like it had been treated (there was some dirt scattered here and there) but it really wasn't - thank goodness I parked behind an SUV with big-ass door handles to grab onto when I started losing traction. How was your commute?

Jody reports on some trash truck ballet outside her window:

This morning I was rewarded with a trash truck ballet, in which two different trash trucks slid and skidded and basically had no control. Ya, it's slippery on my street. No sanding again, which is nice. Eventually the truck that slid past the end of my street was able to get itself turned around before the other one almost took out a small snow bank. Eventually they just parked the two trucks and all stood in the street talking, probably asking themselves if it was really worth it to come in to work this morning. ...

L Dawg marveled at the stretch of virgin snow outside his apartment building. Only one thing to do:

... One entire stretch of road was untouched like this, and so, with the glee of a six-year-old, I spent about five minutes stomping all over the place, deliberately ruining the picturesque view. What was once several hundred square feet of continuous white was now pockmarked at regular intervals with holes, pits in the shape of my boots. ...

The worst commute ever (2 1/2 hours from Roxbury to Quincy) gave John Daley plenty of opportunities to take photos.

Jeremi Karnell got on a plane in Atlanta expecting to be in Boston by 3 p.m.:

...[W]e found ourselves in a couple hour holding pattern over Providence, RI before we were diverted to Bangor Main to refuel. After spending another 2 hours on the ground in Maine, we take off to once again be put in a 2 hour holding pattern. Boston, New York, and Philadelphia all closed down at this point and we were required to fly to Washington, D.C. where I find myself spending the night. ...
