The Supreme Judicial Court ruled today that former House Speaker Thomas Finneran of Mattapan forfeited his right to a state pension when he pled guilty in 2007 to lying in federal court about his role in a state redistricting plan following the 2000 census. Read more.

Boston Police report using a search warrant around 2:0 p.m. yesterday to bust into a Norfolk Street home, where they found a loaded 9mm Luger PT11GT handgun and the 15-year-old they say was the focus of an investigation into gang activity in the area.

The teen, too young to be named, was charged with being delinquent for illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

WCVB reports the shops on Blue Hill Avenue in Mattapan Square, Dorchester Avenue in Fields Corner, Liberty Plaza in East Boston and Beacon Street in Coolidge Corner are among two dozen the perpetually teetering chain is closing in Massachusetts (in other news, there were still two dozen Radio Shacks in Massachusetts).

A pre-teen boy was hit by an SUV on Blue Hill Avenue near Fessenden Street around 5:50 p.m. Not long after, police stopped a suspect at Wildwood and Middleton streets, off Morton.

Traffic was diverted from Blue Hill Avenue onto Norfolk Street.

Boston Police report seizing $40,000 in counterfeit CDs and music-bearing thumb drives from a man they say had set up a mobile store outside SImco's on Blue Hill Avenue Monday night - complete with a speaker playing samples of his wares. Read more.

NBC Boston reports two people were injured around 3:20 a.m. when their car slammed into a car that State Police said was too close to a plow truck putting down salt at American Legion Highway and Morton Street.

Bruce Sadler, 59, yesterday pleaded guilty to two counts of rape of a child for repeated incidents in the early 1990s while he lived in Mattapan and other parts of Boston, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. Read more.

Boston Police report arresting a man for the murder of Marcus Hall June 14 in a Mattapan barbershop where he had brought his son.

William Shakespeare, 29, of Dedham, was arrested in the Bronx by BPD fugitive-unit officers and US marshals early this morning, police say.

The MBTA Fiscal and Management Control Board voted today to hire a construction company to build a $17-million station for the Fairmount Line between Blue Hill Avenue and Cummins Highway, about a quarter mile outside Mattapan Square. Read more.

The Herald reports Jean-Claude Sanon is gearing up for his third try for the District 5 City Council seat (Hyde Park, Mattapan, Roslindale) held by Tim McCarthy.

Sanon, who lost to McCarthy in 2013 and 2015, says he has gained inspiration from the example of Donald Trump, whom few experts expected to win last fall.

Prevailing sentiment in progressive haunts is “2016, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.” Between a stressful election season, acts of terror, and the crisis in Syria, many of us will be glad to see the calendar page turn on Sunday night. Still, to every cloud there is a silver lining, and at least when it comes to tackling climate change in the US, Massachusetts was a bright spot amidst the clouds of 2016.
