Too many damn banks

West Roxbury bankitis, in which the number of bank branches rises higher than the number of pizza places, is spreading. John Ford reports the building housing the Purple Shamrock near Faneuil Hall has been sold and that the new landlord's plans call for the bar to be replaced with a bank. And Ford says he's had enough and has just bought the domain name notanotherbank.com:

I'm mad. To give you another example: A large national bank wants to move into my neighborhood on Charles Street on Beacon Hill. As a result, a small food store business in operation for over 20 years may go out of business. I'm very connected to this neighborhood and I can tell you nobody wants this bank to occupy one of the best corners on Charles Street. But all indications are that this national bank has the political strength to make it happen, and so it more than likely will.

As stated – another large banks wants to take over The Purple Shamrock Pub, which is in one of Boston's best tourist locations. I say hell no.

Wainwright Bank sold to Eastern Bank

Boston-based Wainwright Bank, which bills itself as "the country's leading socially progressive bank", is selling itself to much larger Eastern Bank, also based in Boston. They expect to close the transaction this fall, after which time the Wainwright name will eventually disappear.

Not so fast, TD Banknorth

TD Banknorth wants to merge with New Jersey-based Commerce Bank and rename the whole thing to TD Commerce Bank.

Just one problem -- there's already a Commerce Bank & Trust in Worcester, and they say the new name would infringe their longstanding trademark.

Earlier: It's TDious to keep changing the Garden's name

Say, Boston also has a surcharge-free ATM network

But you wouldn't know it from reading this article in today's Globe.

Memo to Globe business editors: learn something about the SUM ATM network.

Avoid Salem Five Bank at all costs!

Get this: I made a $500 deposit to my bank three days ago, which got processed yesterday. An Amazon purchase I made of $4.99 got processed yesterday as well. I looked at my account activity and saw that I was charged an overdraft fee. I call my bank. The dude tells me that if I make a deposit, they hold ALL of the money in my account until the deposit clears. To be clear, not just the amount of the deposited check, but ALL of the money in my account. I.E. on the day of the deposit, I can't withdraw funds, and if I use my check card, I get an overdraft fee.

Me: "But what if I had tried to use an ATM yesterday?"
