The Herald interviews an Arlington man who fought the $100 fine sought by prosecutors, and won.

The MBTA Transit Police report on the Oct. 26 arrest at Alewife paints a slightly different picture than the simple civil-liberties patina painted by the Herald:

I informed Goodwin that it was his right to refuse to submit to the program, but that he would not be allowed to gain access to the MBTA from this station. Goodwin then became very belligerent, yelling, "I'm not a Muslim, you don't have to check my bag. I don't have to accept this Nazi-ism!!"

Arlington Police recovered two Hebrew scrolls from a guy they say is known to buy stolen property and are now seeking to identify the actual owners.

The boiler without a country

A man stopped to marvel at the big-ass boiler sitting in a drug-store parking lot.

We weren't the only ones who took a swing up Mass. Ave. in Arlington today to see the banned boiler of MIT, which Somerville is refusing to let rumble down its streets on the final leg of a journey from Texas to the school. YourArlington.com reports it could be Tuesday at the earliest before Somerville grants the required permit for the oversized load to enter the city; in the meantime, it sits behind cones, sawhorses and police tape in the parking lot of a Walgreens on Mass. Ave. in Arlington.

Giant boiler bound for Cambridge, banned by Somerville, stuck in Arlington

Truckers trying to deliver an oversize boiler to MIT have instead been forced to cool their heels in Arlington because Somerville officials are refusing to allow the wide load on their streets.

YourArlington.com reports that at one point Thursday, 20 Arlington and Cambridge police and state troopers were on scene at Mass. Ave. in Arlington near the Cambridge line to escort a mini-convoy - the truck pulling the boiler and a couple of pickups - via Rte. 16 and Broadway and then into Cambridge. But while the driver got a permit from Cambridge, he never got one from Somerville, so instead the boiler will be parked in a Walgreens parking lot at least through Tuesday.

The delay is causing some headaches for MIT, which had sent out e-mail on Wednesday alerting faculty and staff of potential traffic issues on Portland and Albany streets yesterday and today while the boiler was being delivered to the Central Utilities Plant.

Common Cause Massachusetts is hosting a Redistricting Olympics this summer. We will be taking citizen drawn Congressional, State House, and State Senate maps all summer, evaluating them, declaring a winner, giving out prizes and submitting the winning maps to the MA Legislative Redistricting Committee for consideration.

The purpose of the redistricting Olympics is threefold: to educate the public about the steps in the redistricting process, to initiate public participation in the political arena, and to pressure the legislature to draw the districts so that the citizens are appropriately represented.

Help show the legislature that redistricting is about our interests, not theirs. By participating in our redistricting Olympics and learning how to draw your own fair districts, you can acquire the tools you need to expose attempts by public officials to politicize the state’s new legislative maps.

APD Capt. Robert Bongiorno said the department took his statements made in the blog as a credible threat and took precautionary measures. The weapons were seized Jan. 13.

Arlington comics retailer: "1 down, 534 to go"

Travis Corcoran, the president of Heavy Ink, an online comic book retailer based in Arlington, Massachusetts and apparently a complete idiot, had some particularly moronic pseudo-anarchistic thoughts about the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords that he posted on his blog, and the blowback from the comics community is already being felt.

Police: Spitting-mad woman attacks bus driver with metal pipe

A homeless woman who apparently objected to being told to pay her fare on a 31 bus in Mattapan yesterday created a ruckus before spitting on the driver and then hitting her with a pipe, MBTA Transit Police say.

Arlington loses a patriot

Arlington Patch reports the passing of Fred Sennott, perhaps best known for his annual role in Patriots Day commemorations as Jason Russell, the Menotomy man shot and bayonetted on his own front steps by Redcoats retreating from the battles of Lexington and Concord.

Like Russell, Sennott was firm in his convictions. Some of you may recall him the old Wicked Good Conference, where he would defend his hard conservative values to the last (his last tagline: "Trust in God and sin not. Don't blame me I'm like Sparky I voted for Sarah too)." And frequently: Over seven years in the forum, he posted an average of five times a day.

But stop him in the street (or walk alongside him at the annual Patriots Day parade in Arlington) and the World War II veteran would just as soon show you pictures of his grandkids - or joke about his being somebody best known for getting shot and stabbed every year (in one discussion about a Boston Massacre recreation, he said he'd given up playing one of the victims years ago, in part because the grass outside the James Russell House in Arlington is softer than the concrete outside the Old State House).

He was a good guy.
