Unlucky day for Brigham's Ice Cream

Wicked Local Arlington reports that Sheriff's deputies closed the Mill Street Brigham's on Friday the 13th after its owner, Deal Metrics LLC of Baltimore, failed to pay rent. The restaurant adjoined the company's now-closed ice cream factory.

Three days earlier, the High Street Brigham's in downtown Boston was closed in a similarly abrupt fashion.

The tough punks of Arlington High

Meredith was on a walk along the Minuteman Bike Path when she found herself tensing as she approached a gaggle of male Arlington High students congregating after school. With good reason, it seems:

... "She's listening to the Backstreet Boys," one brazen youth announced (which I clearly heard because, in fact, I was not listening to the Backstreet Boys. I was still listening to instructional French language podcasts on low volume so I would not get a headache from the farcical French enunciations.)

Hot rage flooded through my body as I plowed ahead on the path. The Backstreet Boys! ...

She walked like a woman but she looked like a man, but bank robber's name probably isn't Lola

Wicked Local Arlington reports that the man Arlington police thought dressed up like a woman to rob a bank this morning was, in fact, a woman - more specifically, a skinny woman, about 5'6" wearing a wig.

Proposed Voter Choice (IRV) Ballot Question would bring more voices and choices into MA elections

A “Voter Choice” initiative petition turned in to the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office on Wednesday would give Massachusetts voters a chance to change to a voting system that lets voters rank their choices instead of voting for only one candidate. The change would apply to key races, including for governor, lieutenant governor, secretary and treasurer, among others, starting after January 2012. Read more

Alewife commuters should allow extra time

The T reports delays out of Alewife due to a broken train. Al Stevens tweets:

Alewife full of people. No trains.

Larabair tweets:

stranded in non-ventilated Harvard for 30'. I would have been 20' early, now i'm late.

Andrew Kimpton tweets that trains getting to Park Street were discharging all their passengers, " forcing hundreds of passengers to wait on the platform." Jeff Dunns adds T workers at Park Street gently encouraged riders to get off the trains by swearing at them.

Of course, every cloud has a silver lining, right? Rebecca Ferrell tweets:

Completed BOTH sudokus AND the crossword in the Metro on my way in to work this morning -- thanks, massive red line delays!

Thank you, Arlington!

Well, I wanted to give a great big thank you to Robbins Farm Park (and the Friends Of organization), the Arlington Center for the Arts, and the residents of the city of Arlington and surrounding towns for coming out en masse yesterday to see Rebel Shakespeare do "Hamlet." We estimated about 500 people were there. Our kids were thrilled with the crowd, the venue, the enthusiasm for outdoor theatre, and had the time of their lives. Thank you bunkosquad and friends for coming out -- wish I'd had more time to chat with you. Read more

Jay Kaufman, how could you?

Dan Dunn, who lives in Arlington, is not at all happy with his state rep, Jay Kaufman, because Kaufman didn't just vote to make Sal DiMasi house speaker, he did so with relish - and then defended him when the Globe first started asking questions about Cognos:

... End of questions about his integrity, Jay? Really? A grand jury still has some questions. So do I. And they're questions about you.

Arlington elementary school to let students ride their bikes

Lauren Hefferon reports she and other bike-backing parents finally got school officials to give the idea a try, several years after the school superintendent banned bikes. Only problem: The school doesn't want to install a bike rack.

Villainy at Menotomy: Patriots die at hands of regulars

Furore as Redcoat stabs, beats Jason Russell to death in front of his own home this very afternoon.

Reports reach us that chastened regulars beating a slow retreat from their whupping at North Bridge in Concord this morning set upon the citizens of Menotomy, attempting to ransack and burn down houses in the village as brave patriots assembled at Jason Russell's house to try to stop them.

Survey says: Arlington wouldn't mind if chickens came home to roost

A (granted, completely unscientific) poll says not only would most people in Arlington not object if the town allowed people to keep chickens in their backyards, 9% said they would strongly consider getting some live fowl themselves, YourArlington reports.

The town's been clucking about the issue thanks to Town Meeting articles that would legalize chicken keeping. The Board of Health, however, prefers to keep the idea cooped up, citing the potential for noise and odors, and selectmen say they are reluctant to back the idea without health board approval.

Not asked in the survey: What's a hen weigh?

Are T drivers eligible for medals?

Zolok writes a driver on the 84 bus in Arlington Heights deserves one for his driving in this morning's snow:

... Damn bus pulled up at the corner of Park and Wachusett in deep in the hills-n-hollers of Arlington Heights, picked up all comers and relentlessly trudged down the Route 2 access road to Alewife....got there safe and sound and in a reasonably timely fashion...I mean who knew?!!!! ...

That's what we might have out here in Arlington if the town's proposed plans for a Massave makeover happen. They're still seeking public comment.

Wicked Local has both a story and a poll about it.

Rte. 2 not for the weak in a snowstorm

Halley recounts her commute home on Friday afternoon from Lexington to Arlington via 128 and 2:

... Next was Rt. 2, a big toboggan run disguised as a highway. Again, people were slaloming along at a fairly reasonable pace and then some unfortunate blockhead would stop dead in front of you for no clear reason, or some ass in a warlike fashion would fly past you in their SUV making you eat their slush. As the hill got really steep around Arlington Heights and the Park Ave exit, I saw a bunch of cars just stopping in mid-highway. The visibility was so lousy, I couldn't see what was ahead of them ... they looked like they'd all stopped dead to look at dinosaurs suddenly crossing the highway or something equally shocking. At that steep height, like a bunch of kids in line at the pool's high diving board deciding they didn't really want to jump, they looked ... scared. ...

Ice-cream issues in Arlington

what?!? Shane Curcuru reports that Arlington is in the grips of an ice-cream shortage:

... The local Stop & Shop on Mass Av in Arlington has one of its two frozen food aisles unplugged and emptied. No ice cream nor frozen novelties were in evidence throughout the store. ... Stop and Shop also has planned for this contingency, and lists four other stores within a 5 mile radius of zip 02476; note however that time of day and traffic conditions may require you to plan for extra time and bring your own cooler and icepacks to ensure the proper temperature conditions of your purchases. ...

Coyote in Arlington

Marc spots a coyote on Rte. 60:

... The nasty-looking animal just looked at me, then continued to head toward Arlington Center.

I guess this should be a warning to Arlington residents to keep their cats inside, at least for the next few days!

Hmm, wonder if it could be Alyssa's man-eating Alewife coyote.
