Arlington tree that came down

Arlington Police report a woman out for a walk with her young son was hit in the head by a falling tree limb at Bellevue and Morton roads shortly after 3 p.m.

The woman, 29, was taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive, police say, adding her son, 3, was not injured. The tree also took down a transformer and power lines. Read more.

Old Christmas trees on pedestrian bridge over Rte. 2 on Arlington/Belmont line

There's probably a good reason why the pedestrian bridge over Rte. 2 at the Arlington/Belmont line is packed with all the old Christmas trees that David Weininger spotted this morning.

Prevailing sentiment in progressive haunts is “2016, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.” Between a stressful election season, acts of terror, and the crisis in Syria, many of us will be glad to see the calendar page turn on Sunday night. Still, to every cloud there is a silver lining, and at least when it comes to tackling climate change in the US, Massachusetts was a bright spot amidst the clouds of 2016.

Woody Allen - Take the money and run - Bank robbery

Federal authorities today announced the arrest of an alleged bank robber they'd dubbed the Spelling Bee Bandit because his notes were so poorly written.

During each robbery, the man handed the teller a note with the word “ROBERY” or “ROBERT” demanding cash.

UNEDITED: Bystanders rush to help woman after she accidentally drove vehicle into Spy Pond in Arlington Description

Arlington Police report a woman backing into a parking spot on Linwood Circle drove over a curb and right into Spy Pond around 1 p.m. today.

Three bystanders jumped into the water and were able to rescue the operator of the vehicle. The victim was conscious and alert when she was pulled from the water. She was cold, but otherwise unhurt.

Cambridge Police have released a photo of a pedestrian they say used his shoulder to push a bicyclist off her bike in Inman Square on Sept. 22.

WCVB reports a State Police cruiser stolen from a state lot on D Street South Boston this morning showed up, abandoned, around 12:45 p.m. at Twin City Plaza in Somerville.

Arlington Police report the rescue of a man screaming in the middle of Mystic Lake despite his best efforts to jump out of a Fire Department boat.

Arlington High School got a bomb threat shortly before 9 a.m. today, Arlington Police report. Students and staff were initially told to shelter in place, but then students were sent home for the day as a precaution even after police determined the threat - that backpacks would explode and students be shot - was not credible. Arlington Police report that officers sent to check on a distraught woman in a Grove Street apartment this morning managed to open her barricaded door after they heard her yelling about killing herself - only to have her charge them "swinging [a] large knife violently." Read more.

Arlington Catholic High School on Medford Street was evacuated today after somebody called in a bomb threat shortly before 1:30 p.m. Arlington Police report:

After a thorough search, officers determined at 3:30 p.m. that nothing harmful was inside the school.

Police say they are now comparing notes with their counterparts in several other towns in eastern Massachusetts, where similar threats were called in.
