Residents in four City Council districts have preliminary elections tomorrow to narrow the fields in the November elections to two candidates each. There is no preliminary for the four citywide council seats because there are eight candidates, all of whom will battle in November. Read more.

Mayor Wu is endorsing Enrique Pepén, her former constiuent-services director, over incumbent Ricardo Arroyo in the District 5 (Hyde Park, Roslindale, Mattapan) City Council race in the Sept. 12 preliminary election. Wu had backed Arroyo in previous campaigns - including his run for DA, at least until those allegations surfaced. Read more.

The four people running for City Council in District 5 (Hyde Park, Roslindale and Mattapan) met in an online forum last night and agreed on basic issues more than they disagreed: All are in favor of trees, making streets safer and supporting some form of rent stabilization. Read more.

The Longfellow Area Neighborhood Association and other civic groups will host an online forum for the four candidates running to represent District 5 - Roslindale, Hyde Park and Mattapan - at 7 p.m. on July 18.

Incumbent Ricardo Arroyo faces challenges from Jean Claude Sanon, Enrique Pepén and Jose Ruiz.

Ricardo Arroyo, son of one former city councilor and brother of another, is looking like he'll be replacing Tim McCarthy in Hyde Park, Roslindale and Mattapan, while Liz Breadon is defeating Craig Cashman in Allston/Brighton in the race to replace Mark Ciommo. Read more.

On the night of the preliminary election in September, outgoing District 5 City Councilor Tim McCarthy tried to rev up supporters of his aide and would-be successor Maria Esdale Farrell, who won a slot in the November final by coming in second against Ricardo Arroyo to represent Hyde Park, Roslindale and Mattapan. On Tuesday, Boston voters will narrow the field for candidates for at-large candidates and for candidates in several districts.

Voters can choose up to four at-large candidates, and will narrow the current field of 15 to 8 for the November final election. In District 5 (Roslindale, Mattapan, Hyde Park), District 7 (Roxbury), District 8 (Beacon Hill, Back Bay, Fenway, Mission Hill) and District 9 (Allston/Brighton), voters will narrow the field to two candidates for November. There are no preliminaries in the other districts.

At a candidate forum at the Blue Hills Collaborative tonight, six candidates for the District 5 (Hyde Park, Mattapan, Roslindale) seat being given up by Tim McCarthy agreed in broad strokes on almost everything, differing mainly on the specifics of how they would accomplish their goals on specific topics. At a candidate forum last night, two candidates for the District 5 (Roslindale, Mattapan, Hyde Park) city-council seat - Ricardo Arroyo and Mimi Turchinetz - repeatedly proclaimed themselves progressives who would go far beyond constituent services and help other progressives on the council tackle issues from systemic racism to the climate crisis.

Maria Esdale Farrell, who works as an education aide to current Councilor Tim McCarthy, said idealism is all well and good but that she would largely stick to McCarthy's current focus on bread-and-butter local issues, such as potholes and crime. Alkia Powell, who currently works in the Mayor's Office of Economic Development, agreed with Arroyo and Turchinetz - and Farrell - on many issues, but did not call herself a progressive. Read more.

Progressive West Roxbury/Roslindale is hosting a forum for multitude of candidates for the District 5 (Roslindale, Mattapan, Hyde Park) seat that Tim McCarthy is giving up this year.

The forum starts at 6:30 p.m. on May 23 at St. John Chrysostom Hall, 4750 Washington St. in West Roxbury.
