Will Roseliep reports spotting two coyotes at Walter and Bussey streets by the Arboretum Friday night.

They were most definitely snacking on something - maybe a housepet, maybe some Slim Jims from a nearby c-store.

The Globe's resident crank would rather just kill them, no doubt with his bare hands (no, actually, he wants to blast them with a shotgun), which mystified Roseliep:

These guys looked so chilled, and weren't disturbed by my high beams ...why kill shoot them all when they obviously just want to live a quiet life amongst Roslindale/Newton/W. Roxbury residents?

Map shows the 1.5-mile radius around Faulkner Hospital in which crews will check for beetle infestation - and area in which residents, businesses now banned from removing wood to other locations.

Photo by Jenn Forman Orth.State officials are convening a press conference at 11 AM today to discuss the discovery of Asian Longhorn Beetles at the Faulkner Hospital grounds, just mere steps from the Arnold Arboretum.

Six trees showed signs of the telltale beetle bored holes in their trunks and USDA officials confirmed the sightings this weekend. It's unknown what measures are going to need to be taken, but due to the proximity, I worry for the Arboretum.

When the sun hits the Hancock just right at sunset, it changes color rather dramatically, making a trip up to Peters Hill in the Arboretum well worth the effort.

Arnold the coyote in Aboretum

I saw the coyote in Aboretum in March 2008. His name is Arnold. The Aboretum is obviously named after Arnold the coyote. It took me one year to find Arnold so do not expect to see him every day. I have the only PHOTO of Arnold! I will someday hang the photo of Arnold up on the gate to Peter's Hill next to the sign warning people to beware of Arnold. Almost NOBODY goes where Arnold was seen and I keep that place a secret where he probably hunts rabbits. A red fox lives there also. Arnold is not anywhere near where the people go. Arnold hunts at dusk.
