Alleged perv with a cell phone nabbed at Cleveland Circle eatery

Wicked Local Allston/Brighton reports a woman using the restroom at Cityside spotted a man's arm attached to a cell phone in the neighboring stall. He says he just went into the wrong restroom by mistake (and presumably has a naturally wide stance).

MBTA looks to sell air rights over Cleveland Circle trolley yard

But a consultant says development would be next to impossible without serious work by Boston and Brookline, whose line the yard and adjacent properties, such as the old Circle Cinema, straddle, Wicked Local Brookline reports. One wonders if Brookline would ever approve the 8-to-16-story building next to Fisher Hill the consultants say would be necessary just to break even on the development costs.

Police: BC student picked the wrong car to bend the windshield wipers back on

Boston Police report that around 1:15 this morning, the dude decided it would be interesting to walk up to an occupied car at 1950 Beacon St. and bend back the moving windshield wipers. Unfortunately for him, police say, the car was occupied by two plainclothes Boston police officers:

Officers quickly exited their cruiser, approached the suspect and displayed their badges while identifying themselves as police officers. While officers were in the process of identifying themselves, the suspect became less than polite and proceeded to berate and belittle the officers.

Charged with being a disorderly person.

Innocent, etc.

In search of a good home: A 1949 television

Old TV If you were driving around Sutherland Road in Cleveland Circle today and spotted a forlorn, ancient-looking television by the curb, Brad Kayal will explain its story:

I moved to Boston in the spring of 2001 and didn't really know anyone in this city. I also lived in a 200 square foot basement studio apartment in Mission Hill and attracting any visitors was kind of tough.

So, to pass some time that first summer I bought this old and broken 1949 Admiral television set on eBay to fix up. It was salvaged from an old radio and TV repair shop in Connecticut that burned down and was in pretty bad shape. I spent over a week sanding and refinishing it and then refitted it with a slightly more modern CRT tube and chassis. This 1949 Admiral became my first working television in Boston. ...

Alas, the years were not kind to the old Admiral ...

Sleazy thug gets life for murdering Bible-studying cabbie

A Suffolk Superior Court jury today convicted Cleveland "Sleazy" Martin of first-degree murder for the death of Brookline cabbie Heureur Previlon in 2005, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Prosecutors successfully made the case that Martin and Jashawn Robinson - who is still awaiting trial - killed Previlon for his fare money on Aug. 25, 2005. The two made a point of calling a Brookline cab for a trip from Cleveland Circle to Monastery Road because they knew Brookline cabs did not have a partition between the passenger and driver's seats, unlike Boston cabs - and brought kitchen knives wrapped in alumnium foil so as not to leave fingerprints.

After being refused at least twice (by other cabbies due to the short trip), the men succeeded in getting a ride from Previlon, who took them from Cleveland Circle to a parking lot shared by St. Gabriel's Church and St. Elizabeth's Hospital. Once there, they stabbed Previlon to death before running to the nearby Jette Court residence of Martin's 16-year-old girlfriend.

Previlon drove a cab at night to support his family while training to become a minister.

"Heureur Previlon was a truly innocent victim, a man with only kindness in his heart, who paid the ultimate price for trusting the wrong men," DA Dan Conley said. "His case touched the hearts of police and prosecutors alike. We are very pleased with the verdict and we hope it brings some comfort to the family Mr. Previlon left behind."

Beware of strange men offering you a great deal on a mezuzah

He gives a failing grade to the sub/pizza shops of Cleveland Circle

And Eagle's is the worst of them all, new Cleveland Circle denizen Martin Lierbaman writes:

... Either the B.C. kids have really low standards for good food, or these places just aren't even trying. How I long for the days when I could get off the T on my way home and eat at T. Anthony's, a real pizza place, and a real good one at that.

Man charged with knifepoint stickup outside Cleveland Circle theater

Brookline Police report arresting Valery Dlaurent, 20, on charges he held a man up at knifepoint in the parking lot of the Circle Cinema shortly before 9 p.m. on Saturday.

Minor victories

With our neighborhoods increasingly overrun by bank branches, it must count as a minor victory that only half of the former CVS store abandoned when the pharmacy moved across the street is a bank.

The other half is a shiny new branch of the Chipotle chain. They were giving out free burritos at their official opening yesterday. When I rode by at about 6, the line was out-the-door and down to the corner by the Store24.

I'm torn about a big national chain spun off from McDonald's no less down the street from local folks BoLoCo (Boston Local Company). But, at least Chipotle sponsors a cycling team.

She continues to explore the empty, rolled up sidewalks of the Boston area

When last we left Susie, she was trying to navigate her way home from Quincy Market at 2 a.m. in the pouring rain. In today's episode, our heroine discovers that the last trolley leaves Cleveland Circle at 12:10 a.m., not 12:30 and that Beacon Street can be a most lonely place at that time on a Monday/Tuesday:

... You will continue standing like an idiot until a cop drives by you twice and then stops to ask what you're up to, probably figuring you're a hooker or selling some sort of illegal substance. He will then offer to go find a cab for you. When he returns, he will lecture you about not calling a cab before leaving your friends' house and not at all understand your reasoning behind it. ...

Will Safety First on the T Hurt You?

The number two item in the MBTA customer bill of rights reads: Your safety is our top priority. If we are not performing to your standards, please 'write to the top'. Top level management will respond. Given my interest in personal safety and experiences with the T, I had the opportunity to try this out.

To me, riding the T is usually painless, but getting on the "C" line "train" in Cleveland Circle can be hazardous to my health. Getting to the "T" platform in this area requires crossing Beacon Street near Reservoir Liquors or Maryann's Bar. Both locations have poorly maintained street lights and crosswalks that have faded into oblivion. For several months the green lights on the traffic light and the pedestrian walk lights were burned out leading drivers to believe they were out of service. The end result is that many drivers do not stop when the traffic lights turn red, leaving pedestrians to jump out of harms way when a driver barrels through. This problem is compounded by drivers who use the crosswalk area for parking and delivery liquor store delivery trucks who use it for unloading. Read more
