UPDATE: Lyons was ordered held in lieu of $10,000 bail in Brighton District Court, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Police charge an Everett man who had trouble keeping his pants up had no problems wresting control of an 86 bus and trying to crash it - but was foiled by a fast-thinking rookie driver who managed to apply the emergency brake.

MBTA Transit Police say Donald Lyons, 52, reached across the 24-year-old driver - on the job for just 2 1/2 months - around 7:30 last night and grabbed the bus's steering wheel as it approached Commonwealth Avenue on Chestnut Hill Avenue:

Residents from Brighton, Brookline and Newton are trying to organize a task force to watch over a proposed hotel and retail development that would demolish not only the vacant Cleveland Circle Cinema but the Applebee's next door, on land split by the Boston/Brookline line just down the street from Newton.

The first meeting of the Cleveland Circle Task Force is Tuesday, March 8 at 7 p.m. in the basement of Roggie's, 356 Chestnut Hill Ave.

Wicked Local Allston/Brighton reports police charge Kevin Michael McCarthy robbed the Beacon Street Tedeschi store in August, then attempted to throw investigators off his trail by changing his photo in the BC imaging system.

According to police, McCarthy robbed the store around 5 a.m. on Aug. 13, four hours after he went in and inquired whether the store was open 24 hours and if the coffee was fresh. After beating the clerk and forcing him to empty two registers, police say, McCarthy demanded to know where the coffee was before fleeing.

Developer proposes replacing Circle Cinemas with hotel

The Herald reports (bottom of article) that Boston Development Group of Newton wants to replace the vacant movie complex with a 150-room hotel and retail space. No word if guests will be required to watch a short video with blinking arrows showing the best way to exit onto Beacon Street.

Michael Pahre discovers the secret to the good job DCR is doing cleaning up its sidewalks in Cleveland Circle after years of not giving a flying fig about pedestrians: Shovel-wielding prisoners from the state Department of Corrections:

... Nobody was shackled hand and foot to each other. But they were wearing orange jumpsuits with big, black letters "DOC" on the back, and there were two vehicles -- one from DCR with equipment, the other a van from DOC for the passengers -- slowly following the shoveling men as they worked their way around the ice rink and reservoir. ... Sounds to me like a good solution to address something that used to be a big problem.

Wicked Local Allston/Brighton reports a woman using the restroom at Cityside spotted a man's arm attached to a cell phone in the neighboring stall. He says he just went into the wrong restroom by mistake (and presumably has a naturally wide stance).

But a consultant says development would be next to impossible without serious work by Boston and Brookline, whose line the yard and adjacent properties, such as the old Circle Cinema, straddle, Wicked Local Brookline reports. One wonders if Brookline would ever approve the 8-to-16-story building next to Fisher Hill the consultants say would be necessary just to break even on the development costs.

Police: BC student picked the wrong car to bend the windshield wipers back on

Boston Police report that around 1:15 this morning, the dude decided it would be interesting to walk up to an occupied car at 1950 Beacon St. and bend back the moving windshield wipers. Unfortunately for him, police say, the car was occupied by two plainclothes Boston police officers:

Officers quickly exited their cruiser, approached the suspect and displayed their badges while identifying themselves as police officers. While officers were in the process of identifying themselves, the suspect became less than polite and proceeded to berate and belittle the officers.

Charged with being a disorderly person.

Cleveland Circle Store 24 held up at gunpoint

Boston Police report the Store 24 at 1912 Beacon St., was held up around 1:30 this morning by two guys with a gun.

One suspect was described as a Hispanic male, about 5'8", weighing 170 lbs. and wearing a gray hoodie, black T-shirt and a do rag. The other was described as a black male, about 5'10", weighing about 250 lbs. and wearing a black hat and jacket.
