Hingham Police report a local resident was convinced by a caller that he'd just won the sweepstakes and all he had to do was provide his Social Security number, his date of birth and his Mass. driver's-license number. Police say he did not win the sweepstakes, but he now has to watch out for identity fraud.

A federal jury today convicted Jayme Gordon, 51, on wire fraud and perjury charges for his attempt to force DreamWorks to pay him for what he claimed was his prior work on a story about a fighting panda. Read more.

A Hull man was arrested for illegal possession of an explosive device today as police were combing his house for clues to the break-in he'd reported.

Kevin Butler, 26, was also charged with illegal possession of anabolic steroids and disturbing the peace, Hull Police say. Read more.

Deer and Massachusetts state trooper at Nantasket Beach, Hull

Neil the roving UHub photographer reports a deer emerged from the ocean at Nantasket Beach this afternoon - possibly after running into the water near the comfort station at the north end of the beach.

The Patriot Ledger reports a Weymouth man whose first name is Kevin took objection to an acquaintance posting a video on Facebook about "a goat named Kevin who was not nice to other goats in the video," so he stabbed him.

In his defense, Kevin the Goat really isn't nice (language NSFW).

The Supreme Judicial Court today ordered a trial for a man charged with reckless endangerment of a child after he was allegedly caught drunkenly stumbling down the Kingston/Plymouth Line with his 11-year-old son.

A district-court judge had tossed the charge - but left standing another criminal complaint for violating a law against walking on train tracks - saying prosecutors had failed to prove that David Coggeshall knew he was putting his son at risk as they ambled down the tracks in 2013.

FAA officials spent 3 1/2 hours listening to residents and elected officials rip into the way planes now fly over a host of communities, at a Milton meeting on Thursday that they agreed to attend only after US Rep. Stephen Lynch threatened to cut the agency's budget for community outreach by $25 million.

The meeting brought out several hundred people from Belmont to Hull, to complain that a new GPS-based flight-path system may be great for airline profits and schedules, but means unlucky residents are now subjected to endless waves of planes, often starting at 5 a.m., for days on end, because of the way it slots planes into very narrow air corridors. Residents also said planes are flying lower than they used to, further contributing to the noise. Read more.
