Boston City Councilor Lydia Edwards has defeated Revere School Committee member Anthony D'Ambrosio in the Democratic primary to replace state Sen. Joe Boncore in the First Suffolk and Middlesex district (which includes East Boston). With no Republican candidate, that means she will soon move from the City Council to the State Senate. This isn't one of those historic puzzlers where they will tell us the answer later - they really aren't sure and are seeking help identifying the church. See it larger - or see it gigantic.

The Charlestown Patriot-Bridge reports the BPDA has dismissed three proposals by developers for building housing at the Charlestown Navy Yard's rotting Pier 5 - one of which called for dealing with rising sea levels by building the units as floating pods.

The agency, which owns the pier, had solicited proposals for what to do with it; a residents group has called for it to be replaced with a park.

A Charlestown man who admitted acquiring 36 guns through a straw purchaser in New Hampshire to resell to Boston-area customers was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison today, the US Attorney's office reports. Read more.

New development doubling as a flooding barrier.

The Flatley Co. has filed broad plans for a proposed 25-acre development between Medford Street and the Mystic River that will feature buildings as tall as 22 stories - on a site raised 22 feet above water so it can double as a barrier to protect hundreds of acres well inland of its own holdings from the sort of flooding researchers now predict for 2070 as sea levels continue to rise. A Braintree developer says it will soon file plans to turn the 20.5-acre site of a former sugar refinery on the Mystic River into a large mixed-use development fronted by a large seawall that will both protect the lower parts of the area from flooding caused by rising seas and create a new linear park that will give residents access to that part of the waterfront for the first time in decades.
