Stephen Murphy will be asking the state Legislature to let Boston skip a preliminary at-large election this year and simply put all nine candidates on the November ballot, Wayne Braverman reports. The move would save the city the $500,000 it would cost to eliminate one of the nine candidates.

By adamg - 7/3/07 - 12:27 pm

Gosh, isn't it just so absurd that Boston has to hold a preliminary election to eliminate just one candidate from the at-large city council race - at a cost of $500,000? Why can't that lamer college student just drop out?

No and no. Suck it, whiners. You don't like democracy? Move to North Korea.

Sure, $500,000 for one election seems like a lot of money, but:

That amount represents about 2/10ths of 1 percent of the Boston municipal budget (now around $2 billion).

David Bernstein reports that City Councilor Michael Flaherty has taken to thundering about "two Bostons" just like John Edwards with his "two Americas." If Flaherty does run for mayor, will that sell in a majority-minority city?

Seth Gitell covers his hat-tossing at the Roslindale Sons of Italy. Connolly came in fifth two years ago in the race for one of four at-large seats.

Special tip for John Connolly: If you want to save money on your campaign, go through your phone list and delete all the numbers that start with 508. They're either people who don't live in Boston and who can't vote for you or they're Boston residents who work in the suburbs who don't appreciate having their work phones tied up by auto-dialers.

To replace former Senate President Robert Travaglini. It's state Rep. Anthony Petruccelli of East Boston vs. Revere City Councilor Dan Rizzo. Technically, it's a Democratic primary, but since there aren't any Republicans running ...

Linehan, of South Boston, beats Passoni, of the South End. He gets to serve until at least the fall elections.

By adamg - 5/15/07 - 9:31 am

Sco posts an interview with Susan Passoni of the South End, running against Bill Linehan of South Boston in a May 15 special election for city council (whoever wins will have to run again in the fall). Among other things, she calls for increased tax revenue from large commercial landholders and for more money from the city's non-profit landholders:
