Copley Square

By adamg - 12/29/16 - 2:19 pm

NorthEndWaterfront.com wonders if the real reason the current operators of First Night have shifted the midnight fireworks from Boston Harbor to Copley Square is not because it's cheaper but to try to build up a Boston version of Times Square:

Watch this year as the TV hosts interview the Copley attendees and count the suburbanites that will have come in to Copley, all decked out in a spectacularly crowded space. The Back Bay event will be instantly labeled a “success” because it will look good on television.

Giant turkey in Copley Square

Christina couldn't help but notice this really tall turkey in Copley Square this afternoon:

It was the weirdest scene. Literally rehearsing a scene with a kid and a skateboard and sad turkey...

New entrance between old and new wings of Copley Square BPL library

Not long after the Johnson wing of the BPL's main library went up, the story goes, an old lady became forever trapped in the stairs that were the only way to get between the new and old wings. The new renovations have finally fixed that.

UPDATE: When I originally posted this, I thought this was just one of those urban legends. But it turns out an elderly woman actually did die in a BPL corridor, although not one connecting the two wings, in 1977.

Trump supporter in Copley Square

This Dedham resident says he's been coming up to Copley Square since May to show his support for the Republican nominee. He says most people ignore him, some take his photo, some give him the finger and a few wave. As we spoke, a woman in her 30s came up to him with a big smile, exclaimed "I'm going to vote for Trump, too!" "Tell your husband!" he exhorted her, then started yelling to passersby, as the Opera Singer Guy continued to belt out a song about 40 feet away: "A million-dollar woman! We've got a million-dollar woman right here!"

Alex Green can't say enough about the new non-dungeony insides:

A literary culture thrives on readers, and while our city has never lacked for those, it has gone long stretches with little in the way of public spaces in which they might feel inspired to gather. The Boston Public Library’s newly renovated Johnson building, which opened on July 9, so successfully embraces and celebrates the idea of being a literary public space that it has the potential to fill that absence for good.
