Two former organized-crime enforcers from Massachusetts will not have to worry about being executed, at least not by the government, if a jury convicts them of smashing Whitey Bulger's head in not long after he arrived at a federal prison in West Virginia in 2018. Read more.

The Montreal Gazette talks to former Canadiens enforcer Chris "Knuckles" Nilan about "Black Mass." Seems Nilan was once married to Whitey's stepdaughter, so he's obviously qualified to talk about the movie. Also, he's "a product of Boston’s rough-and-tumble West Roxbury," the Gazette reports. Stephen "Stippo" Rakes, who claimed he was allegedly extorted for his Morrissey Boulevard Liquor Store by Whitey Bulger, Stephen Flemming, and Kevin Weeks, was found dead on Mill Street in Lincoln, MA.

Rakes who had been slated to appear as a witness for Carmen Ortiz found out on Tuesday that he would not be called as a witness. Last week, Kevin Weeks testified that Whitey did not extort Rakes but instead it was Rakes who tried to extort Whitey.

Every single reporter covering the Bulger trial is, of course, livetweeting the testimony. For the most part, the tweets, by their very nature, are just brief little nuggets of testimony (last week, during testimony on some of the murders, it was like a horror remake of "Groundhog Day" as each reporter followed the other with basically the same exact description of a bullet in the head or a rope that was too thick, over and over again).

WGBH provides this animated re-enactment of the cursive exchange at the Bulger trial the other day. Will they be animating the descriptions of the rope that was too thick to strangle somebody?
