A Near Futuristic Dystopian CD Release brunch lands at the Burren on Sunday, May 22

The Unreliable Narrator Theater Group and The Pluto Tapes are hosting a CD release party for the cast album of 2010: Our Hideous Future: The Musical! on Sunday, May 22 at The Burren, located at 247 Elm St, Somerville, MA at 3 PM.

Featuring local artists Kamela Dolinova, Emily Taradash, Julia Lunetta, Timothy Hoover, John Deschene, Kay Coughlin, Katie Drexel, Ginger Lazarus, and Will Todisco, the cast album features all of the songs from the hit cyberpunk musical comedy 2010: Our Hideous Future: The Musical!, ranging from whimsical (“Doing The Best That I Can”), to the grooving (“Bangor Boogie”) to the memorable and uplifting (“The Future’s Not What It Used To Be”). Joining them are local artists electronic violinist Mei Ohara (fresh from performing at the Unreliable Narrator Showcase), the cyberpunk band Br1ght Pr1mate, and the Pluto Tapes.

The cast of 2010: Our Hideous Future: The Musical! will also perform songs from the album.

Just wondering if anyone else is attending the satellite broadcast of the DCI Drum Corps World Championships tonight at the Fenway Regal Cinema at 6:30pm? It's also being broadcast to other movie theaters via satellite around the Boston area.

Unreliable Narrator Theater Group announces UN-Vaudeville, a showcase of independent artists from the comedy, music, theater, and burlesque scenes of the Greater Boston area. It's happening Tuesday, March 30 at 8 PM at Johnny D's in Davis Square for a $10 cover.

This spectacular evening will be hosted by K’Tharr, an interstellar warrior-bunny last seen in 2009’s production of "Paranormal." It is a fundraiser for the next Unreliable Narrator production, a sci-fi musical comedy in August. In addition to scenes from the August show, "UN-Vaudeville" will include:

The Whitehaus' 12-hour long Blastfest brings Weird New America vibe to Central Square

Morgan Shaker is prominent among the young creatives at the Whitehaus – the Jamaica Plain musician, poet, and artist co-op known for its DIY philosophy and positive “yes wave” attitude. One of many musicians under that roof, he often takes a lead role as organizer and promoter of events. Friendly and thoughtful, he’s frequently called upon to share his philosophy about what the Whitehaus Family is and does.

Right now, Morgan Shaker is busy promoting Blastfest III, March 20th, at the Cambridge YMCA. It’s an equinox celebration that runs 11 AM to 11 PM and features the talents of over two dozen acts. It’s also all ages show, and admission is $5 to $10 “on a sliding scale…no one refused”– a remarkable bargain for twelve hours of entertainment. Once admitted, you may come and go as you please.

An improbably wide variety of musical styles will be represented. Taken collectively, these dissimilar sounds contribute to Blastfest’s “Weird New America” vibe. Blastfest is an unusual event for sure, but it’s also part of a tradition of independent event promoting–and simply independent doing–that is dear to a virtual community of like-minded artists worldwide.

Kendall Square Cinema one of few venues in US for "Neil Young Trunk Show"

Although Neil Young Trunk Show, a hard-rocking performance movie directed by Jonathan Demme, only recently had its local premier at Coolidge Corner Theatre, it will be on DVD and Blu-ray before you know it. If you want to catch this film in a theater before then, one of the few places in the country to do so is Kendall Square Cinema in Cambridge. There, starting March 19, it will run for one week. I was a big fan of the Dropkick Murphys hit and Red Sox fight song "I'm Shipping Up To Boston" which also found its way to the soundtrack for The Departed (on YouTube here.) Their more recent effort from this summer, which they wrote for Improper Bostonian is called "The Chosen Few" and has been derided as "sorta like drunken karaoke." What do you think? So I know this guy Jim Infantino. I met him in the late 80s when I managed a coffee house and slummed around with folk musicians. Twenty years on, he's a band now called Jim's Big Ego (see http://www.bigego.com ) An ego so big it needs three people on stage to get all that amazing music out there. He's (They've) got a new album coming out, and I figured I'd share it here because there are some folks who will really totally dig his political message and the music.
