If you go up on Echo Bridge, could you hear the water gushing through it?

In recent decades, the Newton Upper Falls landmark has become a place to jog or just take in the views - or listen to your echo - but with today's water emergency, the state reactivated the aqueduct the "bridge" was built for in 1877.

More Sudbury Aqueduct photos, from its start in Framingham to the gatehouse that lets it flow into the Chestnut Hill Reservoir.

At this rate, I should probably get a bird book

We went to Echo Bridge in Newton today, and it really is amazing - you can basically whisper and hear your voice echo back from the other side of the Charles (so you can imagine what it was like when an exuberant kidlet decided to yell). Up river, near the old mill, we spotted the above large bird (so for those of you who know the distance, yes, it pays to have a zoom lens). Anybody know what it is?

Yay, Echo Bridge won't close after all

As Harry Mattison notes, it's amazing what a little public pressure can do.

Aw, aw, aw, Echo Bridge closed

UPDATE: But it will re-open in a couple of days.

Suddenly, a blast from the past:

Echo Bridge closed to the public.

Understandable, I guess, but still sad.

More Echo Bridge and Hemlock Gorge photos.
