School Superintendent Mary Skipper told Lyndon K-8 Pilot School parents yesterday that she's appointed school Co-Leader Catherine Carney, who only started this summer, to take over as full School Leader after the other school co-leader, Andre Ward, suddenly went on leave. Read more.

Boston Police report a student was stabbed in the shoulder at Jeremiah Burke High School in Dorchester around 11 a.m. on the third day of school.
A 17-year-old from Randolph, too young to have his name released, was arrested after he turned himself in at the District C-11 station several hours later, police say.

WFXT reports on the agreement between the Wu administration and the state in advance of a meeting this morning where a state board was to vote on a declaration that Boston schools were collectively "underperforming." The Boston School Committee today announced its two finalists to replace Brenda Cassellius as Boston School Superintendent: Mary Skipper, currently Cassellius's counterpart in Somerville - and former administrator of BPS high schools - and Tommy Welch, currently the Region 1 K-12 superintendent for BPS, who oversees 15 schools in Charlestown, East Boston and the North End. Administrators at the Kenny Elementary School on Oakton Avenue in Dorchester put the school into "safe" mode - nobody was allowed in or out - for about 20 minutes this morning after two anti-maskers showed up and demanded entry for a 9-year-old student they said didn't want to wear a mask and didn't have to. A paraprofessional at the Mario Umana Academy was convicted this week of raping a developmentally disabled student five times in 2015 and 2016, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. Read more.

The state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education today formally blasted Boston Public Schools, saying they need "immediate improvement," especially in the ways the system deals with special-education and ESL students and transportation and with the fact its central administration is pretty dysfunctional.
