Boston Magazine reports a woman plunged into the pit at Back Bay Tuesday night and was safely returned to the platform by fellow riders.
The same basic thing happened at Mass. Ave. last night.

Sunglass Hut, 86 Newbury St., was held up around 8:15 p.m. by a man who showed a clerk a knife - and then walked out with a single pair of sunglasses.
He's described as black, mid-40s, about 5'6" and 160 lbs. He wore a gray sweatshirt and was last seen sauntering towards Boylston Street holding a brown paper bag.

Apparently a manhole outside 505 Boylston St., just past Clarendon, has been steaming all week, giving passersby a strong whiff of something awful. But today, it started steaming even more than usual, and firefighters, at first thinking they were dealing with a flaming manhole, doused the thing with liberal amounts of water. They summoned NStar, whose hole it is, to the scene; before an electrical crew could arrive, firefighters discovered the smoke was, in fact, steam.

A concerned citizen complains:
I don't want to be a wet blanket, but every evening when I walk through the Public Garden between 5 and 6, I see this gentleman feeding the geese and ducks, in spite of the fact that such feeding is not allowed - I would normally let it go, but he feeds them practically every night, and he feeds them a lot! If this really harms the critters, someone should talk to him - otherwise, they should remove the signs!

The Tech reports the ban applies even to frats in Cambridge as the Interfraternity Council tries to get Boston to lift what is essentially a ban on all parties at MIT dorms on account of that student falling four stories through a skylight at an illegal roof-deck party. The council kinda needs to try to get the ban lifted by September, when the frats hold their annual rush week.

Boston Municipal Court Judge Thomas Horgan ruled today that Kevin "Kayvon" Edson is competent enough to assist in his own trial, following a mental-health evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospitals, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.
Edson is charged with disturbing the peace, disorderly conduct, disturbing a public assembly, possession or use of a hoax device and making a false bomb threat for an incident April 15, not long after memorial services at the Boston Marathon finish line.

City councilors began work today on a zoning change that would allow art galleries to open in areas such as Newbury Street, where, technically, they are currently prohibited.
City Councilor Josh Zakim (Back Bay) said he was amazed to learn recently that ISD rejected a request by Pucker Gallery, 171 Newbury St., to move to 240 Newbury St. because of the prohibition.
