The Globe reports the owner of the Summer Street power plant, which almost never generates power anymore, has put the property up for sale - with an eye towards maybe turning the space into residential and commercial space, as one does.
Although the mostly pink plant no longer pushes out the current, it is still in use as a power substation.
Ed. note: Could somebody please find a giant inflatable pig and float it up near the smokestacks before they come down?

Despite what the city was telling at least one Brighton resident, people didn't have 48 hours for saving a space they'd marked. Jenna spotted this DPW truck on O Street in South Boston this afternoon with the bed full of cones and other items people had used as space savers.
Gordon Bedford wonders if the city will use all the cones for a Burning Man-like structure and set it ablaze.

The Boston City Council today approved a request from at-large Councilor Michael Flaherty for a hearing to try to get Massport, the BRA and the city Economic Development and Industrial Corp. on the same page when it comes to re-use of the city-owned land on Boston Harbor.
Flaherty made his request after news broked that Massport has put land out to bid in the Boston Marine Industrial Park in South Boston and that one bid calls for relocating businesses from Widett Circle, including meatpacking plants, even though the industrial park is supposed to be limited to businesses having some relation to the seas. Michael Norton, who has long owned buildings that house restaurants, wants to open one of his own: He's applied for a liquor license for vacant restaurant space in a building he renovated at East Broadway and L Street.
Norton, who is "Southie born and raised," his attorney assured the Boston Licensing Board this morning, wants to open a restaurant there with chefpreneur Brian Poe and area restaurant owner Gordon Wilcox. Read more.

A series of hearings on licenses to serve all kinds of liquor today turned into something of a battle between the North End, where restaurants that traditionally serve nothing harder than aperitifs want to up their game and the South Boston waterfront, where lawyers say more hard-liquor licenses are desperately needed to quench the thirsts of the thousands of new residents, workers and visitors flooding the once desolate area. A pair of South Boston residents who set out for Broadway station on the Red Line refused to let the fact that the 9 bus never came stop them from getting to Newbury Street for a gallery show. They set out on foot down Broadway to the station - making sure to stop at every bar on the street for a fortifying shot of whiskey. Read more.

The Globe reports Boston officials have decided to tear down the old Northern Avenue Bridge starting in March - although a spokeswoman for the mayor said today that "there will still be an opportunity to preserve the bridge, but it cannot stay where it is because of its current condition." First we learn the city might spend $100 million to fix the old Northern Avenue bridge so GEsters don't have to worry about getting stuck in traffic. Tonight, the Globe reports our local titans of industry can't wait for GE to come to town so we can get us a helipad - one that the state is looking at building as part of the $120 million in infrastructure it promised GE, because what the hell kind of world-class city doesn't have a helipad?
The downtown business community has gone without a public-use helipad for more than 15 years. But that could be about to change. GE’s pending arrival has jump-started the conversation about building one.
They quote some hand servant to the ruling class that "it’s time to consider this as a transportation system amenity."
Wonder if it'll take CharlieCards.

Our own John Keith noticed yesterday that when you go to noindycarboston.com, you're immediately redirected to indycarboston.com - and that the "no" domain is registered to Kathryn Norton, a.k.a. Kate Norton, a.k.a. the PR person for the proposed annual car race through the streets around the convention center. The actual No IndyCar Boston is at noindycarboston.org.

Vague talk about doing something about the rusted out old Northern Avenue Bridge one of these years has suddenly become a more focused goal of city officials now that GE is moving to the South Boston Waterfront; the Globe reports officials made fixing the bridge part of their pitch to GE and seem confident they can come up with the money to fix it up.
