Downed tree in the South End

Neal Gaffey shows us the remains of a Bradford pear tree in the South End this morning, adds:

As pretty as they are in the spring, they are inappropriate as urban trees because they weaken over time and lose limbs regularly. The City is slowly replacing them with American elm, maple, pin oak, and ginkgo as they age out.

A squicked out citizen files a complaint about the "serious cockroach problem" on the Harrison Avenue block just south of East Berkeley:

Every night I walk home from parking my car I have never seen so many on the sidewalks and street. And it only seems to be that one block.

Well, at least they're not flying.

Two Globe reporters spend time with the addicts on the stretch of Mass. Ave. now known as Methadone Mile.

It's an interesting, sad read, worth the time - and maybe an e-mail to the mayor's office asking whatever happened to Long Island.

Perhaps there'll be a part 2 in which they talk to the people who live in that area (yes, there are apartments there) on how their lives have been changed by the influx.
