Demonstrators outside BRA office in the South End in 1968

On April 25, 1968, South End residents held sit-in at what was then a Boston Redevelopment Authority office in an old fire house on Warren Avenue in the South End, to protest the authority's large-scale South End urban-renewal plans that would force thousands of residents to move.

The former fire house (on the right) and the neighboring building with one of the area's wholesale florists, remain to this day, now as condos: Read more.

The Huntington News reports on rats and mice running roughshod over Huskies. One student was bitten, another reports putting towels under her doors to try to keep one hallway mouse from getting around, a third describes the situation of students competing for the best rooms only to get rodents as "ironic."

Patron Yemere came to Roxbury to learn how Family Independence Initiative (www.fii.org) works. A few months later he was on a flight to Tanzania to sow the seeds of the new initiative in his homeland. The rest is history. This weekend, at a workshop in Boston, two African brothers joined the new initive that share dreams and resources in helping families achieve economic mobility.

City Councilor Michelle Wu (at large) says a rapidly growing Boston can no longer simply dole out unlimited free resident parking permits to residents and wants the city to start charging $25 per annual sticker - with exemptions for senior citizens, low-income residents and home-health and BPS staff who make regular home visits.
