Boston's DPW announced today it's holding off on the annual re-start of street sweeping until after "streets are cleared to the curb and gutters are free of ice and snow."

Fans of cleaner streets in the North End, the South End and Beacon Hill, where street sweeping normally starts in March, will have to wait for "a thaw and large scale melting," the department said, adding that also means daytime parking restrictions will not apply there, either. The DPW says it will send out notices when the streets are fit to sweep

Firefighters knee deep in molasses in Boston

Around 12:30 p.m. on Jan. 15, 1919, a large, poorly maintained tank full of molasses on a warm day burst, sending a huge wave of gooey death rampaging down Commercial Street, drowning or crushing 21 people and several horses and cats as it battered the supports of the el that ran down the street and knocked a neighboring fire station off its foundation.

As with so many other major events in the early and mid-20th century, Leslie Jones was there to chronicle the aftermath.

A concerned citizen can only watch in amazement on Charter Street:

A very large skunk was aggressively wrestling with a white kitchen bag full of trash in the alleyway between 44-46 Charter St. Its head and body were protruding through a locked gate as it attempted to rip open the bag and/or pull it through the gate. I'm sure there will be lots of litter to be cleaned up in the morning. Should probably send someone from animal control to investigate. I'm not easily startled, but this skunk was huge!

Ristorante Damiano, 307-309 Hanover St., is moving away from small plates - and is seeking a name change to go with its move to what its attorney calls "full service" Italian food: Separate appetizers, entrees, the whole nine yards.

Other than the name and menu change, attorney William Ferrullo told the Boston Licensing Board today, the restaurant is not planning any changes.

The board votes Thursday on whether to approve the name change. The board does not vote on cuisine.
