Prevailing sentiment in progressive haunts is “2016, don’t let the door hit you on the way out.” Between a stressful election season, acts of terror, and the crisis in Syria, many of us will be glad to see the calendar page turn on Sunday night. Still, to every cloud there is a silver lining, and at least when it comes to tackling climate change in the US, Massachusetts was a bright spot amidst the clouds of 2016.

A Mattapan man had bail set at $50,000 and his alleged female accomplice had bail set at $25,000 at their arraignment today on charges they held up a Papa John's delivery person at gunpoint and then threatened her and her family members with death if she went to police. Read more.

Boston Police report arresting two of the four people they say stuck up a delivery person outside 19 Hiawatha Rd. in Mattapan around 7 p.m. on Dec. 9. Read more.

Boston Police report seizing 444 grams of heroin and $5,000 in cash and arresting Yeury Villar, 26, on heroin-trafficking charges during raids yesterday in the three neighborhoods.

Separately, State Police and DEA agents apparently conducted a raid this morning at a house on Glendower Street in Roslindale.

At least five shots fired shorly before 10 p.m. on Topalian Street at River Street.

Victim identified as DaQuon Brown.

Boston Police report a man in a car was shot around 12:10 a.m. at Tileston and Rosemont streets. He managed to drive away, but crashed into a house a few blocks away at River and Alpine streets.

The man, in his 20s, was pronounced dead of gunshot wounds at the crash scene, police report.

Julian Troche, 24, was ordered held without bail today on charges he fatally shot Andrew Flonory at a party on Astoria Street in Mattapan on June 18, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports. Read more.

State Police report a 16-year-old was shot on a bike path behind Ryan Playground at River Street and Central Avenue around 5:20 p.m.

State Police say the teen was taken to a local hospital and that he is expected to recover.

State Police assumed jurisdiction because the bike path is on DCR land.

Three people who got into an argument with Chaz Burton at a Mattapan party in March began punching him and when that wasn't enough, pulled wooden stakes out of the ground with which to beat him before one of them took out a gun and shot Burton in the stomach twice, Suffolk County prosecutors charge. The Dorchester Reporter reports on action by BPS at the Mattahunt School that will, among other things, stave off a state takeover of the schools as its turned into an "early education center" for pre-school, kindergarten and grade 1 students.

The Mattapan-Ashmont line is a true tourist attraction. Drivers like Tim Murphy love to show it off. Why the T doesn’t better promote one of its true gems is the real puzzler.
