Mary Ellen journeyed way up to Winthrop today to see if she could get a gander at the monk parakeets that seems to have taken up housekeeping there - to the point of building a large nest on a utility pole at Winthrop Beach, across from the Five Sisters. She reports they weren't hard to find. Read more.

Winthrop Police report a man who stole a plumbing truck in Revere, drove it into a house, leveling it, ran away, shot two bystanders - one of them a retired state trooper - then was himself fatally shot by a police officer, around 2:40 p.m. Read more.

Adam Balsam was among the many people who got up early to get a good view of the eclipse, which in his case meant a trip to Wollaston Beach. At first, it was disappointing, because clouds obscured the show as the sun broke above the horizon, but once the sun rose high enough, the show was on. Read more.

The Supreme Judicial Court today rejected a request by a man convicted of a 1974 Roxbury murder that he be freed because of Covid-19 concerns while he purses an attempt to win a new trial, as well as requests for release by two men convicted of a 1984 murder in Dorchester. Read more.
