Copley Square Green Line MBTA stop is done!

The MBTA had its grand-opening ceremony today to announce the completion of the Copley Square renovation project.

There are two entrances to this Green Line station - outbound is at the corners of Boylston and Dartmouth streets while inbound is near the corner across the street, next to the Boston Public Library, Central Branch.

All token gates are open, the escalator (up) on the outbound side works, and both inbound and outbound now have elevators.

Some nice stuff, but lots of 'old' stuff as well. Exited from the new outbound headhouse - I think half the tiles are 'original' - for $83 mil you would think the place wold shine...

One would have thought that they could have had the contractors use a couple of containers of BonAmi and Zud to buff the 1960s tiles back to gleaming white. A bit of steam cleaning and polishing would do wonders.

Other than adding the elevators it seems like not much new here. Yes the fancy glass enclosures and the refurbished iron framing on the inbound side, but is that worth all the money and hassle?

Umm... adding the elevators is an incredibly huge undertaking in an enclosed, limited space. Vastly expensive and time-consuming. And yeah, if you consider a legal obligation "worth all the money and hassle", then yes. Probably cheaper than getting slapped with an ADA lawsuit. Oh... wait...

I said other than adding the elevators. There was a lot of work done refurbishing stuff that had nothing to do with the elevators.

It's been so long, it's probably time for them to start again.

If they start construction next spring, they could finish a second remodel in time for the 150th celebration.

A very dignified entrance! Both of them.
