Dorchester man charged with murder of Jaewon Martin, 14

Timothy Hearns, 20, will be arraigned this afternoon in Roxbury District Court on charges he gunned down the young honor student at a Bromley-Heath basketball court on May 8.

Hearns is also charged with shooting a 15-year-old on the court with Martin, according to Boston Police and the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.

Hearns was arrested today. In a statement, District Attorney Dan Conley said:

The promise of this young life was ended by the utter irrationality of a man with a gun and no regard for who it killed. Like Cedirick Steele, Steven Odom, and too many other victims of gun violence in Boston, Jaewon was shot dead not because of who he was or what he did but because of where he happened to be – at a city basketball court - on a Saturday afternoon. Boston Police and Suffolk prosecutors won’t rest until we hold accountable the person who brought death to this child full of life.

Why is it relevant that the victim was an "honor student"? Does that make his life more valuable than the life of a kid who was just an average student? Isn't it equally tragic either way?

All deaths are tragic, but some more so than others. If a kid's already in trouble and asking for more, it's not quite as immediately sad as some poor kid who had absolutely no reason to be shot to death.

I keep wondering if that's why everybody keeps talking about the "two" 14-year-olds murdered this year, as opposed to the three who have actually died from gunfire this year. How do you just forget?

Or maybe his parents were exceedingly proud of him and wanted the public to know that he had worked hard in school. Personal details make the victim seem less anonymous.

It is not a question of one life's worth compared to another. It is a question of mentioning a kid's accomplishment. It is the least we can do for him and for his family who poured so much into him. That is what he left behind of his own making.
