Greater Boston is bigger than you think

Tonight on "Greater Boston," Emily Rooney discusses that pressing Boston-area issue - what Tiger Woods will say in his scripted event tomorrow.

Also: "The animal ambassador of SeaWorld & Busch Gardens joins Emily along with some of her friends: a baby kangaroo, a kookaburra, and American alligator and Magellanic penguins." Busch Gardens is on the South Shore, right?

Lazst week, as I was diving towards the radio to change the station, she was actually saying:

"I think that we can agree that most of the bullying occurs in the Public Schools."

Proof-positive wrong-headed, moronic talk radio is not confined to angry white males.

Funny thing, I know two sets of parents who pulled their kids from public schools because of bullying. One kid went back in at a later level and different school.

On the other hand, I know at least a seven kids who started out in Parochial or Private schools who were pulled out and put into the public schools because they were being bullied. It was part of the culture there, and nobody wanted to deal with it or preferred the tired old "blame the victim" trips to doing their jobs.

The worst bullying behavior that I had to deal with on my son's soccer team - as a coach - was from kids who went to expensive prep schools where bullying and being bullied appeared to be considered to be character building, at least from some of the appalling things being said by these kids as a justification.

Like, say, a Northeastern University and Harvard alumnus killing a bunch of folks in another state, and a botched local police investigation 24 years ago.

Or, if that's too tabloid or sensationalist for genteel academic WGBH, how about the proposed Boston Public Library closings and cutbacks?

A typical "Greater Boston" show has THREE segments. As I write, the sun is still out...wait until 7:00 pm to see what actually goes on-ther-air on channel 19 (NOT channel 2...it went away last June).

Segment 1 is about Tiger Woods and Segment 3 is about our fine animal friends from some for-profit theme park about to get some free publicity.

In between, Niki Tsongas is scheduled to discuss whether Scott Brown's election means a fundamental change in Washington.

They also have channel 44, and now there are a few digital-only sideband channels too, but I don't know where you get '19' from.

I guess you weren't paying attention when some visitors to UH said they couldn't get channel '7' any more after the digital conversion last June. They tried to STAY on channel 7, but nobody who relied on over-the-air reception could get the signal on his or her digital-to-analog box. So channel '7' moved to its digital home, channel 42. A message inside their carrier says "hey, we USED to be channel 7". When channel 2 was shifted to channel 19, their carrier says "hey, we used to be channel 2".

they better make sure that someone doesn't mistake Emily for the American alligator and tries to drag her out of the studio. Seriously, is it just me or does ER come across as a crass, arrogant dim bulb with the guff that comes out of her sometimes? Probably.

Crass, arrogant dim bulb is truly apt given her guff.

Seriously, I don't understand the Emily Rooney bashing on this site. Can someone summarize for me what exactly it is that she has done to deserve this venom? Greater Boston has been a very good show for years, though I do think it has gone down hill a little in the last couple.

Besides "everything," that is (ooh, I'm just a festering, walking paper cut, I am):

A show called "Greater Boston" should be about Boston, not a PR vehicle for Florida theme parks or a vehicle on which to expound for several days on Balloon Boy. If you need to show off critters, I'm pretty sure there's a zoo around here that can supply them; if you need to talk about publicity-whore weirdos, I'm pretty sure there are plenty of them around to beat up on. At least when "Chronicle" sends Mary to some Caribbean island, they always make a point to interview some Bostonian who's moved there and opened a jewelry shop or whatever.

When I saw the headline in my RSS feed, I assumed this article was going to be about another boston.com tease generator gone awry. You used to point out flaws like these, but I haven't seen any lately. I can only think of a few reasons why:

  • They've refined their newsbot configuration
  • I don't notice as much since I no longer work there and don't take it a professional criticism.
  • Its such an easy target, that it is no longer fun
