Guess it's a good thing MSNBC doesn't own the Herald

The cable news network today suspended Keith Olbermann for making campaign donations to three Democratic candidates last month.

This contrasts with the Herald's Howie Carr. In addition to speaking at and hosting Republican fundraisers this year, the columnist last month gave $100 to Wellesley state Rep. candidate Royall Switzler, according to records on file at the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance.

Carr endorsed Switzler in print on Sunday. Oddly, Carr, who never forgets 30-year-old offenses of Democrats, forgot to mention that Switzler dropped out of the race for governor in 1986 for "exagerating" his military record. Not that Carr's endorsement this year made much difference in Wellesley, where he also lives: Switzler lost.

News Corp donated two million dollars to the Republicans and related groups. Murdoch used to own the Herald. So there ya go.

Don't stop with that delicious thought. If MSNBC owned our local tab...

Does Howie have it in his contract that the Herald would be notified and approve of any political donations?

Plus Howie never pretends to be a real newsman. He's opinion only.

I'll concede the Fox news donation. That seems inappropriate.

"seems inappropriate"? The only thing appropriate to do would be for Fox to drop the bullshit and formally declare themselves the Ministry of Propaganda for the Republican Party. The "fair and balanced" moniker makes a mockery of irony.

There may be a politically-correct bias in most main stream media with the slant generally going towards Democrats more often than not, but there is no such other outright, coordinated message machine like Fox, for the Democratic Party. You'd swear that Karl Rove was actually running the teleprompter. MSNBC is just too annoying to be too effective ... which sort of sounds like a description of the Democrats, so maybe they is in cahoots...?

MSNBC and they NYT are only being politically correct? Please.

Ever heard of Journolist?

I know we're in a liberal state but, at least try to be a little objective.

MSNBC was looking for an excuse to boot Olbermann anyway. "Countdown" pulls higher ratings when Olbermann's on vacation. Yes, the show gets better ratings when substitute hosts fill in. He was constantly trounced by Nancy Grace, for god's sake.

Howie Carr actually *wants* to be fired, but pulls ridiculous numbers, so he can bend the employee's handbook a bit more than Keith.

Relates to WRKO. He still enjoys writing the same columns over and over again at the Herald.

And being right over and over again. How's your column writing career going Adam?

I've never pretended to be a columnist.

But speaking about Carr being right over and over again, I guess you missed his column last week about how the election wasn't over yet.

unlike our bloated friend over there at RKO. Ever listen to some of the spots he does? He reads the copy faster than the Fedex guy from those old commercials. If I was paying RKO's exorbitant ad rates, I'd be pissed. What can you expect from our spoiled little dough boy, ever since the mean old judgie-wudgie told him he couldn't run and play with the brain trust over at TKK. He and Jimmy Severino ought to make a nice fit. F him and his fake street guy act, guy's a dinosaur. We'll see where he is in ten years , when 90% of his audience disappears due to old age.

I'll give you an example of the typical Howie Carr fan; my late grandfather in his last years was bedridden and blind due to diabetes. I can still hear him calling my grandmother; " Loretta! Come in and read me Howie Caahhh's column" His favorite two things were listening to Howie Carr and complaining about how the blacks forced him out of his house on Cummins Highway.

Wow. I hope that you were able to get some recordings of conversations like that for your children (if you have, or plan to have any). Otherwise, in my experience, kids tend to grow up thinking that "that stuff" was experienced by other people somewhere else.

I'll also give you props for acknowledging someone in your family saying that. We all have them, but very few of us will admit to it.

And as I've said before, Howie is still a street guy. It's just that his streets are now Linden and Washington Street in Swellesley.

I'd wager O'Donnell pulled in some decent numbers, but I can see anyone outside of DU and Daily Kos readers tuning into Cenk Uygur when Keith's out.

Olbie's gonna get a slap on the wrist, he'll apologize on air and that will be it. After the financial shellacking NBC took with Conan this year and their horrible overall numbers, I can't see them paying another employee to go away.

Olberman sucks and MSNBC is trying to be the Fox News of the left wing. Those are two facts, and yes Fox News is conservative right wing news. Howie Carr does mail in aspects of his radio show because he is hoping to get fired so he can go to WTKK. His Herald columns on occasion do seem to be from a Howie Carr Ad Lib book, but he offers a different perspective that the Globe is either unwilling or afraid to offer.
Discussion Over. Now lets get back to talking about taking pictures on the T whilst riding our bicycles and pillow fighting in defiance of the Man.

Or Fauxts? Those sound like unsupported subjective opinion statements. They have a place in discourse and you have a right to make them, sure, but you get no fiat.

Facts such as this? I'd like to see the cite to back up this "fact" :

By SwirlyGrrl - 9/28/10 - 3:29 pm#10.

Actually, women are raped because a rapist wants to rape. The vast majority of rape victims are wearing jeans. By that logic, jeans should be taxed.

That said, wearing high heels does have health costs later in life because clomping around in bent foot-hooves wrecks feet, legs, and backs.

You will find plenty to back up both assertions. There are more than several thousand hits for each one - even google scholar generates several dozen. Pick something you like, so long as it reflects the weight of evidence.

It ain't hard.

I agree, if by news you mean unsubstantiated rumors and debunked myths ...except of course Shep Smith who has journalistic ethics. You know what other party had its own propaganda machine? .sizaN eht dna reltiH

Don't take my word. Read about it in Der Spiegel:

Agitators like Glenn Beck are "nationalist, racist and proto-fascist," says Henningsen. "They take advantage of the economic situation, almost the way the right-wing intelligentsia did back in the Weimar Republic."

Ouch. It's true.
